Health and Community Services

Through an initial Provincial Government investment of approximately $700,000 work is underway to develop a provincial intensive inpatient program for people with eating disorders. The dedicated four-bed intensive care inpatient unit at the Health Sciences Complex was announced in Towards Recovery: The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador, released in June 2017. Funding will be used for renovations, recruitment and training, and start-up costs.

Executive Council

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that Jeff Loder will represent the province at the upcoming re-negotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Negotiations, which are led by the Federal Government, are scheduled to begin on August 16 in Washington, DC.

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will announce changes to the Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) Supplement Program, today, August 3. Executive Council

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Innu Leadership have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that outlines their mutual intent to pursue an inquiry into the treatment, experiences and outcomes of Innu in the child protection system.

The Honourable Cathy Bennett announced that she is resigning as Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board effective today (Monday, July 31).

Health and Community Services

Following the release of the Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan in June, leaders for seven project teams have been selected and are now in place. The teams will comprise people and families with lived experience, policy makers, clinicians, regional health authority staff, and representatives from the community and government and will be responsible to action the goals of the plan.

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources, Animal Health Division, is reminding residents that outdoor bird feeders should be removed during the summer to reduce transmission of Avian Trichomoniasis.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

Following public engagement to help reset the province’s innovation agenda, the Provincial Government today released What We Heard: Business Innovation Agenda, a compilation of the views from industry, academia, government and community stakeholders on how to help create the conditions for companies to grow, enabling firms to capitalize on new ideas, processes, methodologies, services or products. Municipal Affairs and Environment

The Provincial Government is providing funding for a new fire truck for Random Island West and will also offer financial support for a feasibility study for a fire hall in Elliott’s Cove.
