Memorial University Applies Genomics Research to Aquaculture Industry Innovation

Thanks to an investment from the provincial and federal governments, Memorial University is leading a pan-Atlantic research initiative to improve the health and welfare of cultured Atlantic salmon using genomic and other biotechnologies. The project will equip the Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry with the information and tools needed to develop more disease-resistant broodstock and improved vaccines, which will result in a more robust industry.

Government Moving Forward with Second Beef Cattle Project

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources is asking farmers with experience raising beef cattle to consider entering into five-year contract that will further diversity the province’s beef industry. Proposals to apply for a herd of five Hereford cattle are being accepted until August 23, 2017.

Government Announces Interim CEO for Labrador-Grenfell Health

Barbara Molgaard Blake has been named Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Labrador-Grenfell Regional Health Authority. Effective August 1, 2017, Ms. Blake replaced Tony Wakeham as Chief Executive Officer upon the conclusion of Mr. Wakeham’s contract. The Independent Appointments Commission has been engaged to fill this position and will use the merit-based appointment process.

Public Advisory: 911 Services Available throughout Newfoundland and Labrador

The Provincial Government is reminding the public that 911 services are accessible throughout the province in the event of an emergency. If residents are unable to use their cell phones or landlines to access 911, they are advised to visit their local fire departments or police detachments directly. It is suggested that residents also identify a working landline that they can use in the case of an emergency.

A chair has been appointed to oversee the work of the Independant Expert Advisory Committee (IEAC), established to make recommendations on mitigating potential impacts of methylmercury from the Lower Churchill Project at Muskrat Falls. Dr. Kenneth Reimer is a retired university professor with a unique background in environmental research and applied project management. He was selected by an Oversight Commitee, comprised of federal, provincial, municipal, Nunatsiavut Government, Innu Nation, NunatuKavut Community Council and Nalcor representatives.
