Fisheries and Land Resources
The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, today provided an update on the department’s two-year study on hook-and-release practices in Newfoundland and Labrador. Announced May 25, the landmark study is specific to the unique environmental conditions of Newfoundland and Labrador and is ensuring availability of the best possible science on which to base future hook-and-release regulations.
Provincial Government to Provide Universal Coverage for Mifegymiso
Health and Community Services
The Provincial Government is providing universal coverage for Mifegymiso, commonly known as the abortion pill, in Newfoundland and Labrador. Mifegymiso will be available at no cost to individuals beginning September 1, 2018. Mifegymiso is an alternative to surgically induced abortions and can be used for medical termination of a pregnancy up to nine weeks gestation age.

Investments Announced for Affordable Housing Projects

The Governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada have provided conditional approval to 10 private and three non-profit sector groups to develop 93 new affordable housing units throughout the province, including 13 fully accessible units. These new homes will be supported by a $6 million cost-shared federal-provincial investment through an extension to the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing 2014-19.
