Office of the Seniors’ Advocate

The Seniors’ Advocate is very concerned about the impact of increased cost of electricity on all citizens, but particularly on lower income seniors. In the past six months the Advocate has received numerous phone calls, emails, letters, and held face to face meetings with groups of seniors. It is well known that very basic of human needs include food, water, warmth and rest yet seniors have consistently expressed concern about their financial ability to provide for the physiological need of warmth.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, accompanied by Mark Browne, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today toured Rutter Inc., for a demonstration of its latest innovation for marine and marine-adjacent industries: the real-time capability to predict the movement of waves. The technology will increase safety and efficiency for operations such as helicopter landings, crew transfer, lifeboat launches, and equipment transfer.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment and Minister Responsible for the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB), will officially open and tour the new, innovative recycling plant in Mount Pearl tomorrow (Tuesday, July 24). Minister Parsons will be joined by Kevin Sargent, Chief Executive Officer of Hebert’s Recycling Incorporated, along with officials from the MMSB.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Provincial Government continues to support job creation and economic growth through the Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) program. To date this fiscal year, 168 projects employing 780 people have been approved totalling $7.5 million.

On Wednesday, July 25, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Her Honour The Honourable Judy M. Foote, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, and His Honour Howard W. Foote, invite the public to join them for the annual Garden Party on the grounds of Government House on Military Road in St. John’s.

Today, the Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, released a set of Community Physical Activity Toolkits designed to encourage, motivate and support residents of the province to be more physically active in their daily lives.

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will announce details on projects under the Job Creation Partnerships Program on Monday, July 23. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Riverside Drive boardwalk (east end) in Bishop’s Falls. Minister Hawkins will be joined by Jerry Dean, MHA for Exploits, and Brian King, Mayor of Bishop’s Falls.

Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary for Service NL, will join federal and municipal representatives for the official opening of the St. John’s Community Market Facility tomorrow (Saturday, July 21). The event takes place at 245 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The Provincial Government continues to support job creation and economic growth through Summer Student Employment Programs (SSEP) this year with over 1,100 students gaining valuable work experience with private and not-for-profit sector employers.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced $71,000 for nine Regional Visitor Information Centres located around the province. This funding builds upon the $1.2 million investment made by the Provincial Government to the eight Provincial Information Centres, including Deer Lake Airport and St. John’s Airport which are open year round.

Finance

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, today acknowledged that S&P and Moody’s have once again confirmed the Provincial Government’s credit rating, and he reiterated that government must continue to reduce deficits while continuing to provide programs and services for the people of the province.

Motorists are advised that repairs on Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive and ramps on Pitts Memorial Drive will begin tomorrow (Thursday, July 19), weather permitting.
