Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

On behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, it is my pleasure to thank Dr. Gary Kachanoski for his many contributions to Memorial University and his work to ensure the province continues to provide world-class public post-secondary education. All Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can be proud of his stewardship of Memorial University and the institution’s valuable social and economic contribution to our province.

Office of the Chief Electoral Officer

Polls closed this evening (September 13) at 8:00 p.m. for the first day of Advance Poll voting in the Windsor Lake by-election.

Children, Seniors and Social Development

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister Responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, will join Nick Whalen, Member of Parliament for St. John’s East, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, for the official opening of Garrison Place, a new 10-unit supportive housing development, tomorrow (Friday, September 14). The event takes place at the John Howard Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, Provincial Headquarters, 342 Pennywell Road, St. John’s, at 2:00 p.m.

Executive Council

Today, the Provincial Government announced appointments to the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, based on a list of recommendations provided by the Independent Appointments Commission.

Fisheries and Land Resources

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources has issued a 50-year agricultural lease for approximately 10 hectares of Crown land near Hopeall, Trinity Bay, to the Newfoundland Pony Society to ensure the continued preservation and care of this important and unique species. The society will use the land for protection, pasture and breeding, and to create a Newfoundland Pony Heritage Park.

Justice and Public Safety

The Human Rights Commission of Newfoundland and Labrador would like to advise the public that nominations are now open for the annual Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Award. This award will recognize an individual who has made and/or continues to make a meaningful contribution to advancing and furthering human rights in the province.

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador would like to advise the residents of Windsor Lake that the Advance Polls are open today, Thursday, September 13.

Fisheries and Land Resources

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, will make an announcement relating to Newfoundland Pony preservation near Hopeall, Trinity Bay, tomorrow (Thursday, September 13). Minister Byrne will be joined by the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Service NL and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary’s, and Jack Harris, president of the Newfoundland Pony Society.

Office of the Auditor General

Auditor General, Julia Mullaley, today released a special report on the Management of the Procurement of Goods and Services at the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD). The audit covered the period July 2011 to June 2016, and was focused on the Facilities Branch in the Eastern region of NLESD. This report was completed in response to Government’s request to the Auditor General in April 2016.

Children, Seniors and Social Development

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, will be in Marystown this week for the Newfoundland and Labrador 50+ Federation’s 43rd Annual Convention. The convention is being held at the Marystown Hotel & Convention Centre, 180-190 Ville Marie Drive, Marystown.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced six new appointments to the board of directors of C.A. Pippy Park Commission.

Health and Community Services

The Provincial Government will hold public consultations to help inform the drafting of new Emergency Health Services and Community Paramedicine Legislation. New, dedicated emergency medical services legislation will bring Newfoundland and Labrador in line with other jurisdictions, and increase accountability and establish provincial ambulance performance standards. Through the consultation process, the department will seek input on how to ensure the new legislation consolidates and improves existing legislation, allows for the adoption of national guidelines, improves system transparency and accountability, reduces regulatory confusion, and implements program standards.

Service NL

Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary for Service NL, will speak at the Candlelighters Association of Newfoundland and Labrador’s ceremony to recognize September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month tonight (Monday, September 10).

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

Thanks to a combined investment of over $591,000 from the Governments Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada, Rosewood Suites in Trinity has modernized and expanded its facilities to meet a growing demand for high-end accommodations in the area. The initiative will result in three full-time seasonal jobs being created and help stimulate new economic activity in the region.

Health and Community Services

Through a $3.8 million investment from the Government of Canada, Memorial University is developing innovative initiatives in genetics and rural healthcare to benefit residents and support economic growth.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

The Provincial Government today announced $7.3 million in total project values to support municipal infrastructure in 13 communities for the districts of Lewisporte - Twillingate, Fogo Island - Cape Freels, Baie Verte - Green Bay, Exploits, Grand Falls-Windsor - Buchans, and Gander.

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, wishes Jewish Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a joyous and peaceful Rosh Hashanah.

Fisheries and Land Resources

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, toured the Western Agriculture Centre: Agriculture Research Station in Pynn’s Brook this morning to view and discuss research projects that will advance and diversify the agriculture industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the signing of a bilateral agreement with the Government of Canada under the Investing in Canada Plan that will provide more than $555 million in federal funding over the next decade for community infrastructure projects.
