Justice and Public Safety

With the legalization of non-medical cannabis set to occur on October 17, 2018 the Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, is encouraging Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to visit gov.nl.ca/cannabis to learn more about what this policy shift means for them and to find answers to their cannabis questions.

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are encouraged to reflect on the importance of the province’s valuable forest resource – and the people who care for and manage it – during National Forest Week, September 23 to 29. This year’s theme is Research Forests: Canada's Living Laboratories.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada are investing more than $746,000 to help the Town of Carbonear implement Phase One of its Downtown Revitalization Plan.

Fisheries and Land Resources

The 2018 census results for the George River Caribou Herd (GRCH) show further dramatic decline and put the size of the herd at 5,500 caribou – a 38 per cent decline since 2016 and a 99 per cent decline since 2001 that puts the herd at its greatest known risk for total extirpation. Biologists from Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec completed the census of the herd in July, with the direct participation of Indigenous representatives from both provinces.

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) joins with other information and privacy commissioners from across the country and around the world in celebrating Right to Know (RTK) Week from September 24 to 30. Motorists in central Newfoundland are advised of vehicle restrictions in place on the Pilley’s Island Causeway Bridge due to the replacement of the bridge deck.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will join officials of College of the North Atlantic and the NL Association of Career Colleges to open the new Employment Assistance Services office, Employment Options, in Grand Falls-Windsor tomorrow (Friday, September 21) at 2:00 p.m. at 62 Hardy Avenue.

Carol Anne Haley, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Community Services, will speak at the opening reception of the Pharmacists’ Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (PANL) annual conference tomorrow (Friday, September 21) at 6:30 p.m. The reception takes place in Salon A at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland in St. John’s.

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources is encouraging residents to participate in upcoming festivals, fairs, expos and exhibitions that celebrate Newfoundland and Labrador’s growing agriculture industry. The St. John's International Women's Film Festival kicked off its 29th year by unveiling its festival lineup in St. John’s today. This highly acclaimed festival is the second longest-running women’s film festival in the world, dedicated to screening films written, directed, or produced by women.

The Labrador Interpretation Centre will close to the public at noon on Friday, September 21, to accommodate a visit from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada. The centre will resume normal operating hours on Saturday, September 22.
