The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, will attend a tree dedication ceremony tomorrow (Wednesday, September 26) at 10:00 a.m. during Explore Forestry Day activities at Margaret Bowater Park in Corner Brook.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will address the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association’s Cold Harvest Conference and Trade Show in St. John’s tomorrow (Wednesday, September 26) and announce funding to assist the industry in building its labour market.

Registration for the upcoming Becoming an Outdoors Woman Workshop at Killdevil Camp and Conference Centre, Gros Morne National Park, is now open. The workshop will run from October 12 to 14, 2018.

Today, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Clayton Walker, President and CEO, Iron Ore Company of Canada, officially opened Wabush 3 in Labrador West. Also attending the event was the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources and Graham Letto, Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources and MHA for Labrador West.

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will address the opening ceremony of the provincial conference of Supported Employment Newfoundland and Labrador, this evening (Tuesday, September 25) at 7:00 p.m. at the Springdale Inn and Suites Hotel.

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Speaker and Chair of the House of Assembly Management Commission, advises that the commission will hold its next meeting on Thursday, September 27, at 3:45 pm.

Health and Community Services

Labrador-Grenfell Health has eliminated the wait list for mental health and addictions counselling services at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. This comes one year into the implementation of Towards Recovery: The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador. This also follows on the Towards Recovery update provided this summer which highlighted that there has been a 35 per cent reduction in the number of people waiting for counselling services province-wide.

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources joined representatives from the Newfoundland and Labrador Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA), to officially proclaim September 22-28 as Aquaculture Week.

ATV users are advised of scheduled bridge maintenance being conducted on the Millertown Junction Road at the approximately three-kilometre mark from September 24 to 28. The road has been closed to vehicular traffic since spring 2018 due to damage from flooding.

Transportation and Works

The Provincial Government is closely monitoring the current labour situation at Canada Post and the potential effect any loss of mail service may have on residents. Canada Post has advised that a disruption in mail delivery could begin on Wednesday, September 26.

Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary for Service NL, will speak at the Annual General Meeting for Thrive. The event will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, September 25) at St. Teresa’s Parish Hall, 120 Mundy Pond Road, St. John’s, starting at 12:00 noon.

September 24-28 is Environmental Public Health Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Provincial Government recognizes and celebrates the important contributions of environmental public health professionals and the work they carry out every day throughout the province.

The ceremony begins at approximately 10:30 a.m. Premier Ball will be joined by the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources.

Additional provisions of the Public Procurement Act relating to supplier components for open calls for bids come into effect today (Monday, September 24). These provisions encompass sections 12 and 13 of the act and sections 24 to 27 of the regulations, and deal with supplier debriefing; supplier complaint process; supplier performance; and appeals to the Chief Procurement Officer. In The Way Forward, the Provincial Government committed to aligning resources to target key sectors and identify priority business opportunities and markets to advance the economic development of our province. To fulfill this commitment, government is undertaking a new initiative to identify areas of economic development potential, targets for growth, and potential new initiatives.

Justice and Public Safety

With the legalization of non-medical cannabis set to occur on October 17, 2018 the Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, is encouraging Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to visit gov.nl.ca/cannabis to learn more about what this policy shift means for them and to find answers to their cannabis questions.
