Mr. Speaker, today I am pleased to rise in this Honourable House to recognize tomorrow, December 5, as International Volunteer Day.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Almost 25 years ago, on December 6, 1989, 14 women were brutally murdered at Montreal’s École Polytechnique. These women were deliberately targeted because the gunman believed them to be feminists. This remains one of the worst incidents of mass murder in Canadian history.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association (NLBA) will be hosting the Under 13 and Under 14 Boys and Girls Club Championships at the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre in St. John’s this week.

Health and Community Services

The regional health forum for the Corner Brook area will take place today (Thursday, December 4) at the Civic Centre in Corner Brook from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will participate in the event.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will provide a grant of $39,000 for enhancements to Papa John’s Sportswear Centre Ltd, a manufacturing services company based in Gander.

During the holiday season, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can take a number of measures to protect themselves as they complete their holiday shopping and determine the charities they may wish to support. It is important for consumers to be attentive to a retailer’s return policy and to be cautious about sharing personal information when shopping online and making charitable donations.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will speak at the graduation of SubC Imaging from the Genesis Centre tomorrow (Thursday, December 4) at 3:00 p.m. at the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation, Memorial University, St. John’s.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, will attend a community planning institute on youth homelessness, organized by Choices for Youth and the Harris Centre, tomorrow (Thursday, December 4).

Natural Resources

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to congratulate the winners of the Daphne Taylor Milk Quality Award of Excellence. The award was created in 1997 to recognize excellence in the production of quality milk.

Advanced Education and Skills

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House today to talk about the success of the Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership. This partnership is between the Innu Nation, the Nunatsiavut Government and the NunatuKavut Community Council and the Nalcor Energy-Lower Churchill Project.

Today the Provincial Government launched a climate information portal on the Community Accounts website providing Newfoundlanders and Labradorians access to historical weather and climate change data observed over time.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works, will kick off the Christmas season tomorrow (Thursday, December 4) with the 28th annual Christmas Lights Across Canada celebration.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development is now accepting nominations for the 2014 Doug Wheeler Tourism Award for outstanding contribution to the provincial tourism industry. The award is presented in honour of Doug Wheeler, a Provincial Government employee who was known for his dedication in promoting Newfoundland and Labrador as a tourism destination. Mr. Wheeler passed away in 1981.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, today announced $100,000 to assist Quinlan Brothers Limited with the installation of new refrigeration control systems in their Bay de Verde processing facility. This funding will allow the company to explore innovation in their refrigeration technology with the goal of reducing energy consumption and cost.

The Departments of Environment and Conservation, and Natural Resources are seeking the public’s assistance in the early detection of a disease in bats called White Nose Syndrome.

The Provincial Government is inviting municipalities across Newfoundland and Labrador to provide feedback on the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy (ATIPP) Guide for Municipalities , a draft document designed to help municipal ATIPP coordinators carry out their responsibilities under the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Natural Resources

Many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will soon be travelling into the woods in search of their Christmas tree. Keeping the festive season in mind, the Department of Natural Resources is asking residents to remember the rules and regulations that govern the cutting of trees.

Justice and Public Safety

Today, the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission celebrates and recognizes International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The annual observance on December 3 of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly. The designation of this day encourages understanding of the issues faced by persons with disabilities, and it aims to increase public awareness of the fact that those who live with disabilities deserve nothing less than full participation and equality in society.
