Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs
An amendment to the Municipalities Act, 1999, was introduced in the House of Assembly today. The amendment proposes that a municipality may, with a vote of two thirds of the councilors in office and approval of the Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, dispose of property at or less than fair market value for social or economic development purposes.

Amendments to Social Workers Act Strengthen Quality Assurance Measures

Amendments to the Social Workers Act were introduced in the House of Assembly today. The proposed amendments will authorize the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Social Workers to utilize quality assurance measures to monitor a social worker’s practice and enhance client care. In addition, the amendments will require that social workers report conduct of another social worker deserving of sanction to the Association’s Registrar.

The Provincial Government today provided an update on the status of the new province-wide Basic 911 service. The new service will come into full effect in early 2015, following the final coordination of all technological and data requirements.
Public Advisory: Burgeo Highway at Wooden Tilt Brook Closed Until December 19
Transportation and Works
The Department of Transportation and Works is advising that the Burgeo Highway at Wooden Tilt Brook, approximately 25 kilometres from the Town of Burgeo, will be closed until Friday, December 19 because of a road washout. Officials from the Department of Transportation and Works are on-site to further assess the situation, remove the existing culvert, and install a temporary bridge.
Auditor General Tables Report on Reviews of Departments and Crown Agencies

In his Report to the House of Assembly on Reviews of Departments and Crown Agencies tabled in the House of Assembly today in St. John's, Auditor General Terry Paddon reports on reviews completed in three Government departments and one Crown agency. He has provided a number of recommendations, directed to Government and the agency, aimed at strengthening financial and operational processes and controls. In addition, the Auditor General highlights a number of findings which arose during the reviews.

New Radiation Treatment Technology Benefiting Cancer Patients

Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation and donors for a tour of a new radiation treatment suite for cancer patients. The suite, part of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, houses a TrueBeam STx Radiation Therapy System, which is a powerful radiotherapy technology that aids in the treatment and delivery of cancer care.
Provincial Government Implements Public Service Pension Plan Reform

Implementation of the Public Service Pension Plan (PSPP) reform, announced on September 2, begins today with the introduction of two Bills into the House of Assembly, An Act to Amend the Pensions Funding Act and the Public Service Pensions Act, 1991 and An Act to Modify Eligibility for Other Post-Employment Benefits. This follows the signing of the Joint Sponsorship Agreement on pension reform by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the five largest unions representing employees of the Public Service Pension Plan.
