The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will speak at the 29th Annual Baie Verte Mining Conference today (Friday, June 3). The Premier will be joined by the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, and Brian Warr, MHA for the District of Baie Verte - Green Bay. The event is taking place at the Baie Verte Kin Centre beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Provincial Government is committed to the continued expansion of the Newfoundland and Labrador tourism season through exciting season extension festivals and events. Budget 2016 includes $144,000 to support events through the province's Season Extension Program. Three events are being announced today, with more to be announced later in the fall and winter.

Transportation and Works

Repairs to the MV Veteran are progressing well and it is expected that testing and trials will begin late next week.

The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services, will attend the Newfoundland and Labrador Foster Families Association Annual Symposium tomorrow (Friday, June 3) at 7:00 p.m. at the Capital Hotel in St. John's.

Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, will speak at the Annual General Meeting of the Newfoundland and Labrador Division of the Canadian Cancer Society tomorrow (Friday, June 3).

Mr. Speaker, in December 2008, the United Nations passed a resolution to recognize June 8 as World Oceans Day. On this day, each year, we celebrate the ocean, its importance in our lives and how we can protect it.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize over 340 firefighters and emergency management practitioners who are participating in the Fire and Emergency Services Training School in Grand Falls-Windsor. It began May 28 and ends tomorrow, June 3.

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will attend the 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association Ceremony of Induction into the Teaching Profession. The event will take place tomorrow (Friday, June 3), at the Glendenning Golf Course, 120 Gabriel Road, St. John’s, starting at 10:00 a.m.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, today outlined the existing rigid standards and regulations around the importation of honeybees into Newfoundland and Labrador.

As incoming Chair of the Council of the Federation, Yukon Premier Darrell Pasloski will host the 2016 Summer Meeting of Canada's Premiers July 20 to 22 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC) in Whitehorse.

Yukon Premier Darrell Pasloski will host Canada's 13 Provincial and Territorial Premiers and leaders of National Aboriginal Organizations in Haines Junction, Yukon on July 20. The meeting will take place on the Traditional Territory of Yukon's Champagne and Aishihik First Nations.

House of Assembly

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Speaker of the House of Assembly, announced the appointment of Mr. Bruce Chaulk, effective May 31, 2016, as the Acting Chief Electoral Officer and Acting Commissioner for Legislative Standards until such time as the positions are permanently filled in accordance with the legislation. Mr. Chaulk has served as the Assistant Chief Electoral Officer and Director of Election Finance since 2011.

Colin Holloway, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will attend the Bowring Park Foundation First World War Commemorative Ceremony tomorrow (Thursday, June 2) at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will take place at The Fighting Newfoundlander statue in Bowring Park.

Transportation and Works

Passenger and freight service delivered by Nunatsiavut Marine and Labrador Marine Inc. will begin on Monday, June 20 with the MV Northern Ranger departing Happy Valley-Goose Bay and the MV Astron departing Lewisporte.

Mr. Speaker, I am very pleased to rise in this Honourable House today to announce changes to regulations that will provide operators of public swimming pools in our province with greater access to trained lifeguards.
