The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

Health and Community Services

The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, today announced that a new safe prescribing course is being developed for health care professionals in Newfoundland and Labrador. The course is being developed in partnership with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (CPSNL) and Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, on behalf of the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will speak about support for Phase 3 of Heart’s Delight-Islington Marina Committee Inc.’s marina upgrade project tomorrow (Friday, May 20).

Municipal Affairs

The Honourable Judy Foote, Federal Minister of Public Services and Procurement, and the Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, will announce federal-provincial investments in infrastructure through the Small Communities Fund component of the New Building Canada Fund tomorrow (Friday, May 20) at the Conception Bay South Town Hall. The event begins at 1:00 p.m.

There will be a presentation of certificates for the participants of the Women in Leadership Law Enforcement Program today (Thursday, May 19). The presentation will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Memorial Campus at Fort Townshend in St.John's.

Through a cost-shared funding agreement between the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Canada, a tender has been called for rehabilitation of the Trans-Canada Highway between Route 340 at Lewisporte Junction to Route 360 at Bay d'Espoir Junction.

The Provincial Government is cautioning motorists to be vigilant and to watch out for moose when driving on the province's roadways. Most of the provincial highway system runs through moose habitat. While accidents are reported year round, more than 70 per cent occur between May and October.

Natural Resources

The application process is now underway for the Prospectors Training Course being offered by the Provincial Government and College of the North Atlantic. The course takes place at Bay St. George campus in Stephenville from May 30 to June 10, and the deadline for applications is Monday, May 23. Applicants who are 19 years of age or older with an interest in prospecting, geology, or in becoming a mineral exploration professional are encouraged to apply.

Service NL

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Service NL and Minister Responsible for Workplace NL, will address attendees at the 60th annual Health and Safety Conference closing dinner tomorrow (Thursday, May 19). The event is hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Health and Safety Association, and will take place at the Hotel Gander at 7:00 p.m.

The results of a recent census of five caribou herds on the south coast of Newfoundland show the island’s caribou population continues to decline but numbers remain healthy, at just under 32,000 animals.
