The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, is joining community partners to proclaim Sexual Violence Awareness Week, September 12-16. Minister Bennett joined the Sexual Violence Awareness Week committee and other community members at a proclamation signing last week at the Multicultural Women's Organization of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Investments announced by the federal and provincial governments during an event in St. Anthony on September 10, 2016, will help boost tourism on the Northern Peninsula. Gudie Hutchings, Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), along with the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, provincial Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, announced combined funding of more than $350,000 for St. Anthony Basin Resources Inc. (SABRI) for two projects in the region.

Collaboration Builds Training Opportunities for Correctional Officer Recruits

A collaborative effort between the Department of Justice and Public Safety and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) will see training of recruits under the Correctional Officer Recruit Training (CORT) program take place at the RNC Memorial Campus in St. John's. The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, joined RNC Chief Bill Janes and Superintendent of Prisons, Owen Brophy, to welcome the new recruits who are beginning their training today.

Provincial Government Provides Update on Collective Bargaining

The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, today provided an update on collective bargaining with the province’s public sector employees. The Provincial Government has formally invited unions to commence collective bargaining. Invitations have been extended to the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) to commence collective bargaining this month. Bargaining schedules with other unions will be arranged over the coming weeks.

Premier Announces Council of the Federation Literacy Award Recipient on International Literacy Day

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced today that Evelyn Lewis of St. John’s is the provincial recipient of the 2016 Council of the Federation Literacy Award for her achievements in literacy. Ms. Lewis is one of 14 recipients throughout Canada to receive the distinguished award. September 8 also marks the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day.
