Octagon Pond Elementary School is ready to open its doors and welcome students for the new school year. The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, toured the new facility today together with Darrin Pike, CEO/Director of Education, and Milton Peach, Chair, as well as other representatives of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board.

The Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) in partnership with the Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board (NorPen) today announced the launch of a residential curbside composting pilot project with approximately 900 households in sub-region four in the Northern Peninsula waste management region. Organic waste collection will commence on September 27, 2016, and participation is voluntary.

Minister Recognizes Newfoundland and Labrador Paralympians

Three athletes form Newfoundland and Labrador, Katarina Roxon of Stephenville (swimming), Liam Hickey of St. John's (wheelchair basketball) and Robyn Andrews of St. John's (equestrian) are competing in the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. The games run from September 7 to 18 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh today congratulated the three athletes on earning the right to represent Canada at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and wished them luck on behalf of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, wishes all students and educators a successful year. A total of 258 schools have opened their doors to more than 66,000 students from kindergarten to Grade 12.

Municipalities Receive $15.6 Million Installment of Federal Gas Tax Funding

The Federal Government has provided Newfoundland and Labrador with more than $15.6 million for community infrastructure through the federal Gas Tax Fund, representing the first of two allocations for 2016-17. The province will receive a total of more than $31 million through the fund this year.

Minister Byrne Announces Additional $500,000 for Apprentices; Launches Stakeholder Consultations

Apprentices in Newfoundland and Labrador will be supported with an additional $500,000 for the Apprenticeship Wage Subsidy, increasing the subsidy's budget for 2016-17 to $7.1 million. The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, during an event hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Association, provided details of the funding increase and announced plans to begin consulting industry partners about the wage subsidy to determine if changes are necessary in today's changing labour climate.
