Blake Russell, a Grade 11 student from Lewisporte, spent his summer learning about Arctic ecosystems through the Students on Ice program. The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods provided an $11,900 scholarship for him to join the 2016 Arctic Youth Expedition.

Earlier this year, upon being notified that the RCMP had concluded its investigation into the shooting death of Mr. Dunphy, I took action to retain the services of the ASIRT to conduct an independent and impartial review of the RCMP investigation to ensure public confidence in the investigation. The request for the review was done on behalf of the RCMP as ASIRT requires ministerial permission.

Appointments Announced for Teachers’ Pension Plan Corporation Board of Directors

The Provincial Government and the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association (NLTA) today announced that eight individuals have been appointed to the Teachers' Pension Plan Corporation (TPPC) Board of Directors. The four Provincial Government appointments were recommended by the Independent Appointments Commission (IAC), representing the first series of appointments through the independent process. The otherfour appointments were selected by the NLTA.

The Federal and Provincial Governments joined today to celebrate the official opening of two supportive housing units for young women in St. John's. The two units at Naomi Centre, operated by Stella's Circle, were funded by a federal-provincial investment of $250,000 through the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement (IAH) 2014-19.

Summer Census Shows George River Caribou Herd at Critically Low Level

Biologists from the Governments of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Quebec, with participation of a representative from the Ungava Peninsula Caribou Advisory Round Table (UPCART), conducted a census of the George River Caribou Herd in July. The population survey shows the herd has further declined to 8,938 animals, down from the 2014 census which showed the population at 14,200.
Funding Supports Learn Not to Burn Program

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, announced funding for the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services at its annual conference and trade show in Corner Brook this past weekend. Over $100,000 was announced for the continuation of the Learn Not to Burn Fire Safety Education Program and to support the annual operation of the association.
