I wish to advise the public that effective today, June 19, 2017, the Chair and CEO of the Board and Commissioners of Public Utilities has been suspended with pay, until a review into recent public statements is complete.

Health and Community Services

The Provincial Government today released its Chronic Disease Action Plan. The Chronic Disease Action Plan contains a series of concrete initiatives focused on prevention, self-management, treatment and care. Each initiative highlights specific actions to support health care providers in delivering quality, person-centred care and to empower people to achieve personal health goals.

An innovative approach to mining narrow vein type deposits will enable Anaconda Mining Inc. to maintain jobs at its Baie Verte Peninsula operation and create opportunities for local suppliers in the region. Anaconda Mining Inc. is partnering with Memorial University to develop the technology to mine these deposits in a more cost-effective manner.

Two companies in Newfoundland and Labrador are bringing technology to the sea and sky to create new jobs and economic opportunities. Fugro Geosurveys is adapting and demonstrating sensor technology for use with Autonomous Underwater Vehicles while Solace Power Inc. is focused on wireless charging technology for small electric unmanned aerial vehicles.

The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, on behalf of the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation and Minister Responsible for the Research and Development Corporation, will announce funding for Solace Power Inc. and Anaconda Mining Inc. tomorrow (Friday, June 16). With support from the Federal and Provincial Governments, organizations in Happy Valley-Goose Bay are advancing business and tourism development in the region. Healthy Waters Labrador Inc. will continue its work to transform Birch Island into an eco-tourism site and the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce will host Expo Labrador 2017 this week.
