Natural Resources

Mining Week is being celebrated November 2 to 8 in Newfoundland and Labrador. This week offers an opportunity for the Provincial Government and industry to work together to raise awareness and understanding of the sector, and to highlight the long-term business and employment opportunities for the province.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Hazelwood Elementary in St. John’s hosted this year’s launch of the third annual Play and Learn Week (November 3-7). The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, was joined by students, staff and parents today for the announcement. Play and Learn Week is celebrated at primary schools throughout the province. This year’s theme is Early Literacy and Active Play.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

Nicole Kennedy of Spaniard’s Bay is the winner of the seventh annual Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarship. The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, recently presented the $1,000 scholarship to Ms. Kennedy, which she earned based on her academic performance, her community involvement, and her essay response to the question “What is the biggest issue facing the province’s fishing and aquaculture industry?” Ms. Kennedy’s essay focused on the need to balance commercial interests with environmental concerns.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will attend the Conception Bay Area Chamber of Commerce film screening of the Grand Seduction tonight (Monday, November 3). The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre in Conception Bay South.

The public is advised that The Rooms will re-open tomorrow (Saturday, November 1) for regular business hours. The issues resulting from yesterday’s water main break have been resolved.

The event begins at 10:00 a.m. The minster will be joined by John Dinn, MHA for Kilbride.

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will be in China from Sunday, November 2, to Friday, November 7, to attend the China Fisheries and Seafood Expo 2014.
