Corner Brook was booming with local musical talent, outstanding performances and industry leaders this past weekend, as the city played host to the 22nd Annual MusicNL Awards Gala. The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, presented awards at the gala last night (Sunday, October 26). The gala was the finale to a week of workshops, roundtables, songwriters’ circles and other activities dedicated to musical artists in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development: Sport Newfoundland and Labrador

The Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association has completed VolleyCentral 2014 after a record 70 teams took part in the tournament. Nine champions were crowned in the following divisions:

Service NL

Service NL would like to remind the public that studded tires may be used in the province as of Saturday, November 1. Studded tires are required to be removed by April 30, 2015, unless otherwise indicated by Service NL.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

This is Caregivers of Family and Friends Week (October 27-31) in Newfoundland and Labrador, a time to recognize the contributions of those who support and care for relatives and friends in communities throughout the province. The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, was in Mount Pearl today (Monday, October 27) for a “Caregiver Day Away” event, hosted by the Mount Pearl Seniors Independence Group, and took the opportunity to sign a proclamation to officially recognize the work of caregivers.

Justice and Public Safety

As the result of recent investigations by the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division of the Department of Justice and Public Safety, several individuals have been convicted of illegal fishing and netting offences.

Health and Community Services

Canadian Patient Safety Week is being recognized in Newfoundland and Labrador from October 27 to 31 to increase awareness of patient-safety issues and share information about best practices.

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador would like to notify electors in the district of Conception Bay South that the deadline to apply for Special Ballot voting is approaching.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will make a health care funding announcement today (Monday, October 27) at the Donor Wall, 1st Floor, Western Regional Memorial Hospital, Corner Brook. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, will join members of the Mount Pearl Seniors Independence Group and representatives of the provincial Caregivers Out of Isolation (COI-NL) program, for a “Caregiver Day Away” event on Monday, October 27, to mark the launch of Caregivers of Family and Friends Week (October 27-31) in Newfoundland and Labrador. Minister Jackman will be joined by the Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Health and Community Services and MHA for Mount Pearl North.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will attend and present the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MusicNL Awards Gala on Sunday, October 26. The event will take place at the Corner Brook Arts and Culture Centre at 8:00 p.m. Premier Davis will be joined by the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, will speak at the grand opening of Scouts Canada's Newfoundland and Labrador Service Centre tomorrow (Saturday, October 25). The event will take place at 10:00 a.m. at 55 Karwood Drive, Paradise.

Child, Youth and Family Services

The Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services, will speak at a foster parenting recruitment event tomorrow (Saturday, October 25) at The Rooms in St. John’s. The event will begin at 2:00 p.m.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, has announced more than $228,000 for the purchase of a fire truck and firefighting equipment for several communities in the District of Lewisporte. Minister Manning was joined by the Honourable Wade Verge, Speaker of the House of Assembly (Acting) and MHA for Lewisporte, at the Lewisporte Firefighters’ Banquet yesterday evening to make the announcement.
