Today, the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, unveiled the Afghanistan Memorial Vigil in a ceremony at the Confederation Building in St. John’s. The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, joined the Premier for the presentation of a Canadian Flag which was flown previously in Afghanistan. The ceremony was attended by veterans, members of Canada’s Armed Forces and families of those who lost their lives during service.

The event will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Main Lobby, East Block, Confederation Building. The event will take place at 9:00 a.m. at the Star of the Sea Hall in Holyrood.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association (NLVA) will be hosting VolleyCentral 2014, October 24-25, in Grand Falls-Windsor, Lewisporte and Gander.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador continues to strongly support the National Aboriginal Women’s Summit. On October 21-22, a Provincial Government delegation led by the Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, and the Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, attended the most recent summit at Membertou First Nation in Nova Scotia. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador also provided financial support for provincial Aboriginal organizations to attend the Summit as well.

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will be at Cannon Richards Memorial Academy in Flower’s Cove, tomorrow evening (Thursday, October 23) to join students from throughout Newfoundland and Labrador at the launch of the annual Provincial Student Leadership Conference. The theme of this year’s conference is Rootspiration!...Let Your Roots Be Your Inspiration. The event begins at 6:30 p.m.

Kevin Parsons, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will attend the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) Small Business Week Open House tomorrow (Thursday, October 23). The event will take place at 9:00 a.m. in the NLOWE Training Room, 84 Elizabeth Ave., St. John’s.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

With support of the Provincial Government, the Fish Food and Allied Workers union (FFAW) and the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University, will continue an in-depth study of the Atlantic halibut stock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, today announced $79,700 to support research into the migration patterns and behaviour of Atlantic halibut through satellite tagging, and $27,530 to advance scientific data collection through conventional tagging.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will speak at an event, organized by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC), announcing a new sponsorship in support of the ArtsSmarts grant program. The event will take place tomorrow (Wednesday, October 22) at Beachy Cove Elementary, 412 Beachy Cove Road, Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Health and Community Services

The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Health and Community Services, will address the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information Annual General Meeting tomorrow (Wednesday, October 22) at the Ramada Hotel, St. John’s. The event begins at 12:30 p.m.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will announce funding for a fisheries science project tomorrow (Wednesday, October 22). Minister Granter will be joined by Earle McCurdy, President, Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union, and Dr. Dominique Robert, Research Scientist, Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research, Fisheries and Marine Institute at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Investments totalling $738,278 will be distributed to four destination management organizations in support of their regional tourism development efforts. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, at the Eastern Destination Management’s annual general meeting in Bay Roberts.

Environment and Conservation

Recycle at School, a pilot project designed to explore the potential for schools to expand current recycling initiatives by diverting additional types of waste from landfills throughout the province, was announced today at Crescent Collegiate in Blaketown. The project, which supports the 50 per cent diversion goal of the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy, is a joint initiative between Eastern Waste Management, the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District and the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The deadline to register for supplementary exams is October 24, 2014. Exams are being offered for nine high school public exam courses from November 3 to 6.
