Today, the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, unveiled the Afghanistan Memorial Vigil in a ceremony at the Confederation Building in St. John’s. The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, joined the Premier for the presentation of a Canadian Flag which was flown previously in Afghanistan. The ceremony was attended by veterans, members of Canada’s Armed Forces and families of those who lost their lives during service.

Summit Provides a Venue for Discussion on a Wide Range of Issues Affecting Aboriginal Women

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador continues to strongly support the National Aboriginal Women’s Summit. On October 21-22, a Provincial Government delegation led by the Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, and the Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, attended the most recent summit at Membertou First Nation in Nova Scotia. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador also provided financial support for provincial Aboriginal organizations to attend the Summit as well.

Provincial Government Provides $107,230 for Advanced Halibut Tagging
Fisheries and Aquaculture
With support of the Provincial Government, the Fish Food and Allied Workers union (FFAW) and the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University, will continue an in-depth study of the Atlantic halibut stock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, today announced $79,700 to support research into the migration patterns and behaviour of Atlantic halibut through satellite tagging, and $27,530 to advance scientific data collection through conventional tagging.

Over $738,000 in Funding Supports the Work of Destination Management Organizations

The announcement was made today by the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, at the Eastern Destination Management’s annual general meeting in Bay Roberts.
Pilot Project Explores the Potential to Increase Recycling at School
Environment and Conservation
Recycle at School, a pilot project designed to explore the potential for schools to expand current recycling initiatives by diverting additional types of waste from landfills throughout the province, was announced today at Crescent Collegiate in Blaketown. The project, which supports the 50 per cent diversion goal of the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy, is a joint initiative between Eastern Waste Management, the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District and the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board.
Supplementary Exam Registration Deadline Approaching

The deadline to register for supplementary exams is October 24, 2014. Exams are being offered for nine high school public exam courses from November 3 to 6.
