The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, has joined with organizations and individuals around the globe to recognize November 13, 2014, as the first World Pancreatic Cancer Day. Purple lighting will illuminate Confederation Building today to coincide with this event.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will attend the Gold Medal Plates event at 6:00 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, November 13) at the Delta St. John’s.

Natural Resources

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, will launch the provincial sustainable forest management strategy tomorrow (Thursday, November 13) at 12:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Suncor Energy Fluvarium in St. John’s during the annual general meeting for the Canadian Institute of Forestry, Newfoundland and Labrador Section.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will join Senator Fabian Manning, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), for a funding announcement related to AbbyShot Clothiers Limited tomorrow (Thursday, November 13). The event will take place at 2:00 p.m. at AbbyShot’s production facility, 75 Barbour Drive, Mount Pearl.

Health and Community Services

A new 12-bed protective community care residence is now officially open in Bonavista. Through an investment of approximately $2.6 million, local residents will have increased access to specialized care to meet the unique needs of individuals with dementia. The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, was joined by Glen Little, MHA for Bonavista South, and representatives from Eastern Health for a ribbon cutting and tour of the facility.

A tender has been called to begin construction of a new school in Paradise to accommodate students in kindergarten to Grade 6.

Are You On The Voters List? Electors in Newfoundland and Labrador are being asked this question as part of an initiative to promote Voter List registration and updates. Voters List Ad Cards are being circulated by Elections Newfoundland and Labrador to provide eligible electors with the option of having their names added to the Voters List or updating their existing information in advance of upcoming elections.

Ten new projects will receive Aboriginal Women’s Violence Prevention Grants for 2014-15. The grants amount to a total investment of $200,000, which is provided annually to the Aboriginal Women’s Violence Prevention Grants Program through the Provincial Government’s Violence Prevention Initiative.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Newfoundland and Labrador played an integral role in the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, led the Canadian delegation at the international conference, which took place November 9-12 and included over 1,000 delegates from around the world.

Transportation and Works

To commemorate the role of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in global conflicts, the new ferry that will service Bell Island will be named the MV Legionnaire with the observation deck and the two passenger lounges honouring the contributions of four notable Bell Islanders – Harry Hibbs, David Nish Jackman, and Tom Fitzgerald Senior and Tom Fitzgerald Junior (Big Tom).

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will participate in the 2014 Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony tomorrow (Tuesday, November 11). The remembrance ceremony will commence at 10:30 a.m. at the National War Memorial on Duckworth Street in St. John’s, upon the parade’s arrival.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will provide the key note address at the inaugural Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s Business Awards on Wednesday, November 12. The event will take place at the Murray’s Pond Country Club at 7:00 p.m.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will officially open the new protective community residence in Bonavista on Wednesday, November 12. The residence provides specialized care for individuals with dementia. The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the protective community residence located next to the Bonavista Peninsula Health Centre.

The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works, will speak at a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Royal Canadian Legion on Bell Island, tomorrow (Tuesday, November 11) at 2:00 p.m. At the ceremony, Minister Brazil will also be announcing the name of the new ferry that will service Bell Island.

The Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, will participate in the annual Remembrance Day ceremony taking place tomorrow (Tuesday November 11), at Branch 51 of the Royal Canadian Legion, in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, at 11:00 a.m.

The Honourable Wade Verge, Speaker of the House of Assembly (Acting), today announced that the House of Assembly will open for the fall sitting on Monday, November 17, at 1:30 p.m.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

A delegation of provincial seafood producers has just returned from pursuing opportunities in Chinese markets at China Fisheries and Seafood Expo 2014, one of the world’s largest seafood trade shows. The producers were supported by the Provincial Government, and joined by the Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, throughout the show.
