Office of the Chief Electoral Officer

On Saturday, November 8, 2014, under the authority of Section 153(1) of the Elections Act, 1991, the Official Addition of the Vote was conducted in the Conception Bay South district Returning Office.

The Office of the Executive Council advises today of a procedural error in the process leading up to issuing the writ for upcoming by-elections in the Districts of Trinity-Bay de Verde and Humber East.

The Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, will address delegates at the closing banquet of the NunatuKavut Community Council’s Annual General Assembly. The event begins tomorrow (Saturday, November 8) at 7:00 p.m. at Hotel North Two in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and the Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, will speak at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Baie Verte Fire Department tomorrow (Saturday, November 8). The ceremony starts at 7:00 p.m. at Copper Ridge Academy, 9 Columbus Street, Baie Verte, with the Minister expected to speak at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Justice and Public Safety

The Provincial Government is investing approximately $190,000 to enhance firefighting capacity in the District of Harbour Main and at the Bay de Grave Regional Fire Department. The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined by Tom Hedderson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development and MHA for the District of Harbour Main, and Glenn Littlejohn, Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly and MHA for the District of Port de Grave, for the announcement.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will be the guest speaker tomorrow (Saturday, November 8) at the Remembrance Day Dinner and Dance at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 32. The event will take place at the Legion in Bay Roberts at 7:00 p.m.

Environment and Conservation

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

Advanced Education and Skills

The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development, and the Council of Atlantic Premiers today announced that apprenticeship requirements in six new trades will be harmonized across the Atlantic provinces: carpenter, welder, metal fabricator, steamfitter-pipefitter, plumber and industrial electrician. This is in addition to work that has already started on the four previously announced trades: bricklayer, cook, instrumentation and control technician, and construction electrician. As a result, Atlantic Canadians apprenticing in these 10 trades will have access to consistent training, certification and standards, leading to more job opportunities and greater mobility while helping address skills shortages in this region.

Education and Early Childhood Development

More than $200,000 in Provincial Scholarships have been awarded to 201 recent high school graduates throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The scholarships, ranging in value from $1,000 to $2,500, are awarded based on public examination results and will help students pursue post-secondary education.

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador is seeking applications for polling station workers for the upcoming provincial by-elections in Humber East and Trinity-Bay de Verde. Workers are needed for advance polls on November 18, 2014 and for ordinary polls on November 25, 2014.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will bring greetings today (Friday, November 7) at the Conception Bay Regional Seniors’ Expo. The event will take place at the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre in Manuels, Conception Bay South at 11:00 a.m.

The Honourable Tony Cornect, Minister of Service NL, will attend the Newfoundland and Labrador Certified Management Accountants’ 2014 convocation celebration. The Minister will speak at approximately 8:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, November 7) at the Holiday Inn, St. John’s.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that the Provincial Government is moving forward with the planning of a new court complex for St. John’s to serve the Northeast Avalon Peninsula. A Request for Proposals for companies interested in completing the initial planning stage of the project will be issued in the coming weeks. Premier Davis was joined at the announcement by the Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will join the Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General in making an announcement today (Thursday, November 6) related to the justice system on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula. The event begins at 2:00 p.m. in St. John’s at Provincial Court, Atlantic Place, 215 Water Street.

Transportation and Works

A new bridge in O’Donnell’s will be open to traffic by fall 2015 with a $2.9 million investment by the Provincial Government. This investment builds on a series of bridge improvement and replacement projects that have taken place throughout the province this year totalling close to $30 million.

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador wishes to notify electors that the Humber East district Returning Office is open for Special Ballot voting. The office is located at 1A Lester Avenue. Special Ballot voting is also available at Elections Newfoundland and Labrador’s head office at 39 Hallett Crescent in St. John’s.

On Monday, November 3, Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Officers from the Corner Brook detachment responded to a report that two dead moose had been found south of Corner Brook, near Beaver Pond in the area of Logger’s School Road.
