Executive Council

Newfoundland and Labrador’s support model for female apprentices has been recognized as a national best practice. The Government of Canada has announced $3.2 million in funding over three and a half years to the Canada’s Building Trades Unions to replicate the Newfoundland and Labrador Office to Advance Women Apprentices model in Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

The Atlantic Accord is a top priority for our government, and Prime Minister Trudeau’s presence in the province today to advance discussions shows this is a priority for him. Both Prime Minister Trudeau and I recognize the significance of these discussions to the future of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will participate in a Heart & Stroke Foundation event related to the Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in Schools Program on Monday, February 25. The event is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Waterford Valley High School, 465 Topsail Road, St. John’s.

Finance

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, will address graduates at the 2019 Chartered Professional Accountants of Newfoundland and Labrador (CPA NL) Convocation tomorrow (Saturday, February 23) at the Delta Hotel, 120 New Gower Street, St. John’s. Minister Osborne will speak at approximately 7:00 p.m.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will participate in the 2019 Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games in Grand Falls-Windsor being held February 22-24 and March 1-3.

The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will participate in the opening ceremonies of the 2019 World Cup Qualifier basketball game in St. John’s tonight (Thursday, February 21). The event takes place at Mile One Centre 50 New Gower Street, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The Provincial Government’s latest project to expand wireless coverage in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador was announced today by the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Service NL and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary's, on behalf of the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has awarded a contract to construct a new primary school in Bay Roberts to replace Coley’s Point Primary. The contract, valued at approximately $16.2 million, has been awarded to JMJ Holdings Ltd.

With parts of Newfoundland and Labrador under an Extreme Cold Warning, the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources is reminding residents that cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather or have access to an insulated dog house.

On March 5, 2019, changes to the Highway Traffic Act aimed at increasing safety for cyclists and pedestrians will come into effect.
