The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced the minimum wage rate as of April 1, 2019, will be $11.40 and the minimum overtime wage rate will be $17.10.

Today marks the 37th anniversary of the Ocean Ranger’s sinking off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador joins all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians as we remember the 84 lives that were tragically lost on this day in 1982.

The Justice Minister’s Committee on Violence Against Women and Girls held its second meeting today with nearly 70 participants joining the Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, and the Honourable Carol Anne Haley, the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women. The committee represents a diverse group of government and community representatives who have experience and knowledge of issues surrounding violence against women and girls.

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, and Derek Bennett, Parliamentary Secretary for Children, Seniors and Social Development, will travel to Red Deer, Alberta, this week to participate in events centred around the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

Construction of the 145-bed long-term care home in Corner Brook remains on schedule to open in 2020. The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Transportation and Works, received an update on the home during a tour of the facility today by officials from Plenary Group.

The City of St. John’s and Destination St. John’s are capitalizing on tourism opportunities by undertaking new initiatives to attract more tourists to the capital city, improve their experience, encourage them to visit communities throughout the Northeast Avalon and extend their length of stay.
