The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, joined with funding partners IBM and the Government of Canada to launch the Translational and Personalized Medicine Initiative (TPMI). The Provincial Government is contributing $7.2 million to a $50 million fund, which will be allocated over the next five years. Led by Memorial University, TPMI will bring the latest and most innovative discoveries in health research directly to patients in an effort to enhance care and treatment options.

Justice and Public Safety

“Workin’ It”, an employment fair for inmates, was held today at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary. The Provincial Government and community stakeholders joined in planning this event which included representatives from organizations that can provide employment and employment preparation for offenders.

Health and Community Services

A new interactive online engagement tool known as the Dialogue App has been launched to assist residents in providing feedback to the Provincial Government on ways in which the primary health care system in Newfoundland and Labrador can be enhanced. The app is now available at: dialogueapp.gov.nl.ca. Feedback will be used to help shape the agenda for the Premier’s Summit on Health Care on January 14, 2015.

The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, November 27) in the Medical Education Centre Atrium at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s.

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House today to present the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s first Regulatory Reform Annual Report. Since this initiative began in 2005, regulatory reform has been a success story for this government.

Mr. Speaker, yesterday was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and marked the launch of the Provincial Government’s fifth annual Purple Ribbon Campaign to raise awareness of violence against women. Today, I rise to pay tribute to the Aboriginal women in Newfoundland and Labrador who take an active role in violence prevention and in promoting other issues of concern within their communities.

Mr. Speaker, the significant investments this government has made over the last number of years, clearly demonstrate our commitment to ensuring quality infrastructure in communities across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, will announce the 2014-15 recipients of capital funding under the Provincial Homelessness Fund tomorrow (Thursday, November 27) in St. John’s.

The Provincial Government’s tourism marketing campaign has been nominated for the Tourism Industry Association of Canada’s 2014 Marketing Campaign of the Year Award. The winner will be announced at the annual National Awards for Tourism Excellence event this evening in Ottawa.

Natural Resources

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources, today joined the Honourable Andrew Younger, Nova Scotia Minister of Energy, and Chris Huskilson, President and CEO of Emera, in a ground-breaking ceremony at the Bottom Brook construction site in Newfoundland and Labrador. The purpose of the event was to recognize the start of construction of the Maritime Link Project and to sign an industrial and employment benefits agreement for the project.

Environment and Conservation

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

Justice and Public Safety

Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation, Glenn Corporation Ltd. and the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission are pleased to announce the settlement of three human rights complaints relating to the former Hamilton Hotel. The complaints stem from an incident in July 2007 in which Innu attending the Hamilton Hotel for a training session were made unwelcome as Innu persons and instructed to leave the premises by the manager.

Four new designations were announced today under the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, made the announcement at a ceremony in St. Lawrence. The inductees are Charles Pearcey of St. John’s, the miners of St. Lawrence, the Fisherman’s Protective Union, and the riot in Badger in 1959.

Mr. Speaker, I rise to pay tribute to the 39th Annual Labrador Creative Arts Festival. Taking center stage at the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre from November 19 to 25, the festival is a celebration of the arts that brings together young Labradorians from all regions and cultures.

Mr. Speaker, as 2014 draws to a close, I rise in this Honourable House to acknowledge a tremendous milestone that was celebrated this year – the 60th anniversary of this province’s provincial parks.

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise in this House today to advise Honourable Members on the progress of this year’s Home Heating Rebate program. The Home Heating Rebate helps thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians each winter.

New legislation will be introduced in the House of Assembly today to modernize the current legislation for child care services in Newfoundland and Labrador, while ensuring the continuation of quality, safe child care across the province.
