The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, is inviting Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to recognize today, December 5, as International Volunteer Day.

The Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, will participate in a candlelight vigil memorial to remember the victims of the Montreal Massacre shootings on December 6, 1989, at Montreal’s École Polytechnique. The event, hosted by the Mokami Status of Women Council, begins at 6:00 p.m. today (Friday, December 5) at The Women’s Centre, 43 Grenfell Street in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, will address the opening of the new Suncor Offshore Research and Development Centre tomorrow (Friday, December 5). The event will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial University’s Engineering Building.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will announce the details of the Provincial Government’s voluntary Operating Grant Program for child care centres tomorrow (Friday, December 5).

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, will speak at the Newcomer Youth Leadership and Careers in the Applied Sciences Conference tomorrow (Friday, December 5). The event will take place at 9:00 a.m. in the Cabot-Gilbert Room, Ramada Hotel, St. John’s.

The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works, will speak at the Genesis Centre’s second annual Pitch101 event tomorrow (Friday, December 5). The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation, Memorial University, St. John’s.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Almost 25 years ago, on December 6, 1989, 14 women were brutally murdered at Montreal’s École Polytechnique. These women were deliberately targeted because the gunman believed them to be feminists. This remains one of the worst incidents of mass murder in Canadian history.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association (NLBA) will be hosting the Under 13 and Under 14 Boys and Girls Club Championships at the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre in St. John’s this week.

The regional health forum for the Corner Brook area will take place today (Thursday, December 4) at the Civic Centre in Corner Brook from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will participate in the event.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will provide a grant of $39,000 for enhancements to Papa John’s Sportswear Centre Ltd, a manufacturing services company based in Gander.

It is important for consumers to be attentive to a retailer’s return policy and to be cautious about sharing personal information when shopping online and making charitable donations.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, will attend a community planning institute on youth homelessness, organized by Choices for Youth and the Harris Centre, tomorrow (Thursday, December 4).

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to congratulate the winners of the Daphne Taylor Milk Quality Award of Excellence. The award was created in 1997 to recognize excellence in the production of quality milk.

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House today to talk about the success of the Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership. This partnership is between the Innu Nation, the Nunatsiavut Government and the NunatuKavut Community Council and the Nalcor Energy-Lower Churchill Project.
