Seniors, Wellness and Social Development
Executive Council

March is Nutrition Month, and the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, and the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Finance and Minister Responsible for the Human Resource Secretariat, joined with representatives from Dietitians of Newfoundland and Labrador today (Monday, March 2) to sign a proclamation to help raise awareness on the importance of healthy eating. This year’s theme is Eating 9-5!, which highlights ways to inspire people to eat better at work, and make positive changes for a healthier workplace.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, will hold a news conference tomorrow (Tuesday, March 3) to release the ATIPPA Review Committee’s Independent Statutory Review of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Minister Kent will be joined by Clyde Wells, Chair of the ATIPPA Review Committee, and Doug Letto, committee member.

Environment and Conservation

The Provincial Government’s latest survey of the Red Wine Mountain Caribou sub population, traditionally found in the northern part of the Red Wine Mountain, indicates this herd is at its all-time low of approximately 20 animals. As such, government is taking steps to ensure any work activity in the area, including Nalcor’s development of the Muskrat Falls Generation Project, involves minimal disturbances to the remaining animals.

Four health care facilities serving families on the Northwest Avalon Peninsula will receive new equipment through an investment of approximately $2.8 million. The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, made the announcement today in Carbonear. Minister Kent was joined by Glenn Littlejohn, MHA for Port de Grave, and George Butt, Vice-President of Eastern Health.

Child, Youth and Family Services

The month of March marks the annual celebration of social workers across the country, and the Provincial Government recognizes the positive work done by the more than 1,500 Registered Social Workers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

March is Pharmacist Awareness Month. The Provincial Government continues to support pharmacists across the province and their increasing role in the delivery of primary health care services. The theme of this year’s awareness month is Pharmacists: Trusted Care When and Where You Need It.

The Department of Finance advises the public that pre-budget consultation sessions will continue in Gander today (Monday, March 2) from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Details of upcoming meetings in Springdale, Corner Brook, Clarenville and St. John’s can be found in the backgrounder below.

Justice and Public Safety

Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador reminds the public that the new province-wide Basic 911 service will be implemented next week. 911 will be available province-wide via landline, and is already available via cellular phone wherever a cellular signal can be accessed.

Environment and Conservation

As an update to the public advisory issued earlier today, the Department of Environment and Conservation is clarifying that Butter Pot Provincial Park is closed from the Park Checkpoint and beyond to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic effective immediately. Vehicular access is permitted to access the ski chalet.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will speak at an event hosted by the Pharmacists’ Association of Newfoundland and Labrador to recognize Pharmacist Awareness Month. The event will take place on Monday, March 2 at 7:00 p.m., Holiday Inn, St. John’s.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will attend the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) international convention and trade show at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Premier Davis will be joined by the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will make a funding announcement at the Carbonear General Hospital on Monday, March 2, at 11:00 a.m. Media representatives are asked to meet at the main entrance of the hospital starting at 10:45 a.m. for escort to the conference room.

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, today invited the leaders of the opposition parties to reconvene the All- Party Committee on Federal Shrimp Quota Allocations.

The Joint Council meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. with Minister Granter's address taking place at 11:30 a.m. at Corner Brook City Hall, 5 Park Street, Corner Brook.

The Provincial Government today announced that an agreement has been reached with the City of St. John’s for the operation of a 911 call-taking centre, also known as Public Safety Answering Point, for the new province-wide Basic 911 service for the Avalon Peninsula.

The Department of Finance advises the public that pre-budget consultation sessions continue to take place across the province. The Honourable Tony Cornect, Minister of Service NL, and the Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will host a community session tomorrow (Friday, February 27) in Stephenville from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Days Inn. The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, will participate in the first ever National Roundtable on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The meeting is being held in Ottawa tomorrow (Friday, February 27).
