A tender has been awarded for the construction of a new school in Paradise to accommodate students from Kindergarten to Grade 6. The contract, valued at $17.2 million, has been awarded to Pomerleau Inc.

Kevin Pollard, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will participate in the official opening of a new community clinic on the Burin Peninsula. The clinic is located one kilometre south of the Boat Harbour intersection, on Route 210 – the main Burin Peninsula highway. The event will take place tomorrow (Friday, March 6) at 11:30 a.m.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation

G.S. Hunt Ltd. has been awarded a $466,000 contract to provide exterior renovations to 16 Newfoundland and Labrador Housing units in two buildings on Vickers Avenue in St. John’s. The project is part of the ongoing revitalization of the Cashin Avenue-Froude Avenue neighbourhood.

The Department of Finance advises the public that pre-budget consultation sessions will take place tomorrow (Friday, March 6) in St. John’s at the Capital Hotel. The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will address members of the Rotary Club of St. John’s today (Thursday, March 5) at the Sheraton Hotel, 115 Cavendish Square, St. John’s.

An event was held today to officially recognize the redevelopment of two operating suites in the St. John's region. The upgrades create a safer and more effective surgical environment and represent a total Provincial Government investment of approximately $700,000. The redevelopment is the result of a funding partnership between the Provincial Government, the Resource Development Trades Council (RDTC) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Building Trades Council (NLBTC).

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

An awareness campaign to provide guidelines to businesses and municipalities on accessible parking has been launched through a partnership between Service NL and the Coalition of Persons with Disabilities – Newfoundland and Labrador (the Coalition). The campaign includes brochures for business owners, pamphlets for accessible parking permit holders and presentations to various organizations such as building design and construction industries and municipalities. The campaign promotes education and awareness of the proper designation of accessible parking spaces, including the correct installation of signage, as well as the proper use of the accessible parking permit.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

Representatives from all parties of Newfoundland and Labrador stood united today with inshore shrimp harvesters, fish plant workers, community leaders, and business owners at a Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW) rally in Gander to seek better federal quota allocations. Last year, in response to declining stock numbers, the Federal Government placed the overwhelming majority of quota cuts on small boat inshore harvesters, while making minimal reductions to the amount large boat offshore operators could catch.

The Honourable Tony Cornect, Minister of Service NL, along with Kelly White, Executive Director, Coalition of Persons with Disabilities – Newfoundland and Labrador, will officially launch the accessible parking spaces awareness campaign on Wednesday, March 4.

The Sir William Ford Coaker Heritage Foundation is better positioned to protect a key Port Union heritage structure as a result of a $100,000 Provincial Government investment. Funding will be used to carry out the restoration of the Union Electric Building which was designated as a registered heritage structure in 2009 by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador. Funding was provided through the Regional Development Fund.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, focused on the long-term outlook of the provincial mining and mineral exploration sectors when he addressed approximately 300 people at an event in Toronto last night. The event, hosted by the Provincial Government and Mining Industry NL, was part of the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) international convention and trade show.

The Provincial Government will implement the recommendations contained within the ATIPPA Review Committee’s Independent Statutory Review of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act and is working to quickly develop an implementation plan. The Honourable Wade Verge, Speaker of the House of Assembly, today (Tuesday, March 3) announced that the House of Assembly will open on Tuesday, March 17, at 1:30 p.m.

In order to raise awareness about the various types and dangers of fraud, and to equip residents with the knowledge to safeguard against it; March is recognized as Fraud Prevention Month in Canada.
