Health and Community Services

The All-Party Committee on Mental Health and Addictions held an initial meeting today and outlined the engagement process that will include province-wide consultations, a review of current services, presentations from experts, stakeholders and regional health authorities.

The Honourable Wade Verge, Speaker of the House of Assembly, advises that on Thursday, April 2, The Quest for Canada, an event recognizing the 200th birthday of Sir John A. Macdonald, will take place in the House of Assembly Chamber.

Executive Council

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, on behalf of the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, will speak at the 10-year anniversary celebration of the Thrive Community Youth Network’s Street Reach Program. The event will take place tomorrow (Wednesday, April 1) at 6:00 p.m. at the Suncor Energy Fluvarium, 5 Nagle’s Place, St. John’s.

I rise in this Honourable House to note the conclusion of Fraud Prevention Month. This occasion is recognized throughout Canada each March to raise awareness of the dangers of all types of fraud, and to provide information that helps people protect themselves against it.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, has announced an external review of the Provincial Government’s current respectful workplace and harassment policies of government.

Finance

Recognizing the important work of community organizations throughout the province, the Provincial Government today committed to maintaining the current level of core funding provided to community-based organizations through Budget 2015.

Executive Council

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House to announce the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will begin to officially fly the Labrador flag at the two gateways at the Labrador and Quebec borders. In the coming months, flag poles will be erected in both border-crossing locations and official ceremonies will be conducted to commemorate these at that time.

Transportation and Works

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise in this Honourable House to congratulate members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Association on being recognized for outstanding achievements in the national construction industry. The association received the Gold Seal Association Award at the 97th annual national conference last week.

Advanced Education and Skills

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to highlight Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador’s annual skilled Career Day held last Friday at College of the North Atlantic’s Prince Phillip Drive campus in St. John’s. I want to thank event sponsors from industry and academia and congratulate all participants, in particular the 48 gold medal winners from the annual competition who will now represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the national skills competition in Saskatoon in late May.

Justice and Public Safety

The Department of Justice and Public Safety would like to advise the public that the Adult Probation Office in Corner Brook has been temporarily relocated as repairs to its permanent location in the Sir Richard Squires Building are completed.

Transportation and Works

The MV Veteran was launched on Friday, March 27, at Damen Shipyards in Romania and is now entering the final stage of construction. The new ferry will service Fogo Island and Change Islands and is expected to arrive in the province in fall 2015.

Justice and Public Safety

A recent investigation by Fish and Wildlife Enforcement officers in the Cape Pond area near Tors Cove on the Avalon Peninsula has resulted in convictions against five individuals for illegal hunting.

Environment and Conservation

Nominations are now being accepted for the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards Program, which recognizes the outstanding efforts of individuals, schools, community groups and businesses in sustaining, protecting and enhancing the environment.

Executive Council

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, will address recipients and invited guests attending the presentation of Bronze Certificates of Achievement for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program in Mount Pearl. The event will be held on Monday, March 30, at 6:30 p.m. at O’Donel High School, Ruth Avenue.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

In keeping with the Provincial Government’s commitment to promoting healthier and safer communities, bike helmets will be required to be worn by bicyclists on streets and roads throughout the province effective April 1.
