The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, is in Copenhagen, Denmark, this week meeting with industry leaders and participating in the 2015 Arctic Technology Conference (ATC). A gathering of global business and academic leaders, ATC provides the opportunity for the industry’s best to come together to share ideas, current research and cutting edge technology. Newfoundland and Labrador will host the conference in 2016.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will address harvesters attending the Harvesting for Quality workshop at the Marine Institute at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, March 25).

Education and Early Childhood Development

Mr. Speaker, over the past decade the Provincial Government has worked successfully to ensure students in every corner of Newfoundland and Labrador have the opportunity to have their educational needs met through distance education. Recently, I took part in a course demonstration at the Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation (CDLI) in Gander and had the opportunity to see firsthand the innovative techniques being used to educate our students throughout the province.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today in this Honourable House to highlight a new innovative education and awareness initiative developed by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Newfoundland Power in partnership with our government.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise today in this Honourable House to speak to the substantial infrastructure investments this government has made in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

Over $19 million in cost-shared funding for multi-year capital works projects was announced today for the City of Mount Pearl. This funding will support a number of municipal infrastructure projects in the city including street improvements, walking trail upgrades and facility renovations to enhance and modernize services and recreation options for the benefit and well-being of families and businesses in the community.

Advanced Education and Skills

The Department of Advanced Education and Skills is now accepting applications for this year’s summer student employment programs. Private employers and not-for-profit groups throughout the province are able to avail of a wage subsidy under these programs to help them hire post-secondary and high school students for the summer months.

Health and Community Services

Kevin Pollard, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will speak at Memorial University’s School of Nursing Scholarships and Awards Ceremony tomorrow (Tuesday, March 24). The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Auditorium of the Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, will make a multi-year capital works funding announcement tomorrow (Tuesday, March 24) in Mount Pearl. Minister Hutchings will be joined by the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier, Minister of Health and Community Services and MHA for Mount Pearl North. The event will take place at City Hall, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House today to congratulate three principals from Newfoundland and Labrador who were recently honoured at the 11th annual Canada’s Outstanding Principals Gala in Toronto.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

I rise in this Honourable House to recognize our government’s continuing contribution to the future of the fish harvesting sector in our province. As many know, the Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Program provides funding to support innovation in the seafood industry and has fostered growth for a number of years.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House today to recognize March 23-29 as Unplug and Play Week, and to challenge Newfoundland and Labrador families to take the pledge and unplug and play for at least 60 minutes a day.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Children, youth and families currently waitlisted for mental health services across Newfoundland and Labrador will soon be able to access mental health programming online and through telehealth. The new service begins in May and will be offered through a partnership with the Strongest Families Institute as a complement to existing programming offered by the regional health authorities.

Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) has been monitoring the current Environment Canada forecast on an approaching weather system which is anticipated to affect this province.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will address the 35th Annual Centreville-Wareham-Trinity Firemen's Ball tomorrow (Saturday, March 21).

Justice and Public Safety

On October 14, 2013, officers with the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division of the Department of Justice and Public Safety received a complaint from a concerned motorist that someone had improperly discharged a firearm on the Trans-Canada Highway near Bishop’s Falls. As a result of the investigation, the individual was arrested and charged with several offences.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will participate in the Arctic Technology Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, beginning Monday, March 23. Minister King will bring greetings on behalf of the province at the Spotlight on Arctic Technology Reception and Awards, well as speak at the Atlantic Canada seminar on Tuesday, March 24.

The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the Atrium on the second level of The Rooms, 9 Bonaventure Avenue, St. John’s.
