Corner Brook Intermediate will open its doors to students this week after the completion of a $16 million redevelopment and extension project. The school can accommodate over 750 students upon its opening.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will address a two-day clinical training workshop hosted by the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador tomorrow (Thursday, September 10). The workshop will take place at the Capital Hotel on Kenmount Road. Minister Kent is scheduled to speak at approximately 8:45 a.m.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, will make opening remarks at a workshop, Universal Design: Building is for Everyone, hosted by the Independent Living Resource Centre, tomorrow (Thursday, September 10) at Bally Haly Country Club, 100 Logy Bay Road. The event begins at 8:00 a.m.

The Provincial Government is investing $750,000 to be used for the purchase of new equipment at health care centres in Whitbourne and Placentia.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

Researchers will use a $358,000 investment from the Provincial Government to support the growth of the provincial salmon aquaculture industry. Through the research project, alternative methods for sea lice removal at Atlantic Salmon aquaculture sites using cleaner fish, specifically cunners and lumpfish, which are native to the province's coastal waters will be evaluated.

This week marks the beginning of a new school year for students in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, is welcoming students and staff back to class and wishing them all the best for a safe and successful academic year.

Justice and Public Safety

The Provincial Government today announced funding toward the purchase of a $340,000 customized fire truck for the Town of Placentia. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined for the announcement in Placentia by the Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary's.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, will address the 40th annual convention of the Newfoundland and Labrador 50+ Federation tomorrow (Wednesday, September 9) at 10:15 a.m. in the convention hall (lower level) of the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will be joined by the Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Humber West, for a tour of the newly redeveloped Corner Brook Intermediate School which is located at 10 St. John's Avenue in Corner Brook. The tour will take place tomorrow (Wednesday, September 9) at 3:00 p.m.

Health and Community Services

The Provincial Government has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to obtain a consultant to assist with the design and development of an implementation plan for a Central Medical Dispatch Centre. The dispatch centre was a key recommendation of the Provincial Ambulance Review and will help integrate 911 services, streamline routine and emergency response transports, and improve overall ambulance availability and response times for residents throughout the province.

Having enjoyed 13 successful years, Gros Morne Summer Music Inc. is preparing to embark on a new project that will help build an international brand for the organization. The Provincial Government is contributing $300,000 over three years to help develop a digital presence, including an app and online magazine that will help showcase local culture, artists and musicians, and advance the western region as a tourism destination.

Mariners are advised that the previously announced planned closure of Placentia Gut to navigation on Thursday, September 10, has been rescheduled and will now begin at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, September 11, until noon on Saturday, September 12.

On Wednesday, September 9, at 1:45 p.m., His Honour the Honourable Frank F. Fagan, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Her Honour Patricia Fagan will host a special event at Government House in celebration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II becoming the longest-reigning sovereign in Canada’s modern era.

Reaching out and saving lives is the theme of this year’s Suicide Prevention and Awareness Week, and the Provincial Government is joining with its community partners in raising awareness of suicide prevention and support. Suicide Prevention and Awareness Week extends from September 7 to 14.
