The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today offered congratulations to the 2017 Brier Bid Committee, STEP (Sport Tourism Event Partnership) St. John’s and the City of St. John’s on the successful bid to host the 2017 Canadian Men’s Curling Championship. The winning bid was announced today by Curling Canada at an event in St. John’s.

The Provincial Government is proclaiming September 14-18 as Sexual Violence Awareness Week in Newfoundland and Labrador, as a way to draw attention to the issue of sexual violence, and encourage people to learn more about its impacts.

The Provincial Government has awarded $140,000 to support successful applicants under this year’s Community Addictions Prevention and Mental Health Promotion Grants Program. A total of 31 recipients across the province – including individuals, community groups and non-profit organizations – will benefit from funding to support their own initiatives for the prevention of addictions and promotion of mental health.

The Department of Environment and Conservation is advising residents that, if purchasing a pesticide application service to control pests, it is important to ensure the operator is licensed. Homeowners should ask to see the company/individual’s pesticide operator and applicator licences before any pesticides are applied within or outside the home.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will attend an announcement by Curling Canada on Monday, September 14.

Transportation and Works

Mariners are advised that work is ongoing in Placentia Gut related to the Placentia Bridge, and access to the channel underneath the bridge will be unavailable for a portion of the weekend.

The announcement will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s offices, 13 Pippy Place, St. John’s.

The development of the Iron Ore of Canada's (IOC) proposed Wabush 3 Open Pit Mine Project in Labrador can now move ahead with today's announcement that it has been released from the Provincial Government's environmental assessment process.

The Provincial Government has invested over $450,000 for the Springdale area to assist with the purchase of new equipment and upgrades. The announcement was made today by Kevin Pollard, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, together with Rosemarie Goodyear, President and Chief Executive Officer of Central Health.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Forestry and Agrifoods Agency advises that it plans to conduct a 290-hectare prescribed burn starting Sunday, September 13, weather permitting, at Denny's Pond. The site is located approximately 28 kilometres south of the community of Millertown and 15 kilometres inside the Denny's Pond South Resource Road in Forest Management District 12.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Provincial Government has released a status report outlining the progress made on seniors' initiatives since the launch of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework in 2007. The announcement was made by the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, during the 40th annual convention of the Newfoundland and Labrador 50+ Federation in Corner Brook yesterday evening (Thursday, September 10).

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will be joined by Kevin Pollard, MHA for the District of Baie Verte - Springdale, and Rosemarie Goodyear, President and Chief Executive Officer of Central Health, to announce health care funding for Baie Verte - Springdale tomorrow (Friday, September 11).

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

To strengthen the Town of Gander’s ability to beautify the community, enhance the potential to attract families, and add appeal to groups holding events, the Provincial Government has provided $552,637 in continued support of the Cobb’s Pond Park Redevelopment Project. Funding has been provided by the Departments of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, and Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs.

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, today reminded residents and visitors to Newfoundland and Labrador that the general seasons for big game in the central and western management zones of the island and Labrador open on Saturday, September 12. General seasons for the eastern region big game zones will open on October 3.

Justice and Public Safety

Officers with the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division will be joined by members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at a media availability tomorrow (Thursday, September 10) to discuss regulations related to big game hunting in the province. The event begins at 11:00 a.m. at RCMP headquarters on White Hills Road in St. John's.
