Provincial Government Recognizes Pride Week 2016

The Provincial Government is once again joining community groups in celebrating Pride Week 2016 (July 11-17) in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, and Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and Community Services, joined members of St. John’s Pride and other community representatives at a flag-raising ceremony at the Confederation Building this afternoon as part of the launch of Pride Week throughout the province.

The Provincial Government remains committed to providing leading edge telecommunications services and infrastructure to the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. An investment of over $1.3 million has been made to provide rural broadband access for five communities on the Northern Peninsula. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, and Gudie Hutchings, MP for Long Range Mountains, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

Over $150 million in cost-shared municipal funding has been made available to communities in Newfoundland and Labrador to support water, wastewater and public transit systems, as the result of an agreement to implement the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund and the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund in the province. The Federal Government is contributing a total of $75 million; the Provincial Government is contributing $44 million, and the remainder will be provided by the recipient municipalities.
