Colin Holloway, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will be in Fortune tomorrow (Friday, August 5) to make a joint federal-provincial funding announcement for the Fortune Port Corporation. The event takes place at the Fortune Head Geology Centre, 49-51 Bunker Hill Road, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will speak at the Town of Port Saunders 60th anniversary celebrations tomorrow (Friday, August 5) at 11:30 a.m. The event will take place at the Port Saunders Recreation Centre.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, today commended the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Society for the major emphasis placed on accessibility for the 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival. The 40th annual festival is being held August 5-7 in Bannerman Park, St. John's.

A new motorcycle licence plate for military veterans was unveiled today by the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. Premier Ball unveiled the new licence plate design at the Royal Canadian Legion War Memorial in Conception Bay South.

Transportation and Works

Several road maintenance and rehabilitation projects are in progress or nearing completion throughout the western region this construction season. The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, is on the west coast this week visiting several projects with area Members of the House of Assembly.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will present the new version of the provincial veterans motorcycle licence plate today (Thursday, August 4) at 10:30 a.m. The presentation will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion War Memorial in Conception Bay South, located on the Conception Bay South Highway (near the Town Hall). Premier Ball will be joined by Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Command President Frank Sullivan.

Environment and Conservation

The Department of Environment and Conservation is investigating recent incidents where soap has been added to a natural waterway to form suds. One instance allegedly occurred within La Manche Provincial Park and another recently in Manuels River.

The Department of Environment and Conservation, is partnering with local rod and gun clubs and the Labrador Hunting and Fishing Association to offer hunter skills workshops to young people between the ages of 12 and 17 in Deer Lake and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. These sessions are designed to educate participants about safe and responsible hunting practices, as well as wildlife conservation, shooting safety, archery and bow-hunting techniques, and outdoor survival skills.

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, has announced that three new firefighting vehicles have been approved for the communities of Holyrood, Isle aux Morts and Jackson’s Arm. The announcement was made today (Tuesday, August 2) at the Holyrood Municipal Building.

Justice and Public Safety

The Provincial Government today released the terms of reference for an external review into the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) and announced that the review would be conducted by Dr. Matthew Bowes. Minister Andrew Parsons committed to the review in light of an incident whereby a murder charge related to a 2013 death was withdrawn in December 2015 due to forensic evidence being misplaced. He is available to discuss the review with the media today at 1:00 p.m. at the Holyrood Municipal Office, 34 Salmonier Line, Holyrood.

Weather permitting, the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency will conduct a 90-hectare prescribed burn tomorrow (Wednesday, August 3) near River Brook. The site is located approximately 10 kilometres south of Crabs River in Forest Management District 14.

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, will join with Betty Parsley, MHA for Harbour Main, and representatives from the Town of Holyrood and the Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department today (Tuesday, August 2) for a funding announcement.

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, today announced that Bob Gardiner, Assistant Deputy Minister (Post-Secondary Education), Department of Advanced Education and Skills, has been named Interim President and Chief Executive Officer of College of the North Atlantic.

The Forestry and Agrifoods Agency is asking the public to participate in a national survey on wildfire prevention in an effort to develop effective forest fire prevention campaigns and materials for use within the province.

A roundabout being constructed at the Ruth Avenue interchange in Mount Pearl by Cougar Engineering and Construction, on behalf of the project developer DewCor, is nearing completion. The roundabout is intended to ease traffic flow in and out of the new Galway development. Final inspection will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, August 2) and the roundabout will be open to traffic on Wednesday, August 3.

To celebrate Food Day Canada, the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency and the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture are working with the Restaurant Association of Newfoundland and Labrador to heighten awareness of local food products.

The Department of Advanced Education and Skills is currently holding roundtables on federal-provincial agreements that support efforts to train and develop the workforce needed to secure a better future for Newfoundland and Labrador.
