Municipal Affairs and Environment

The The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

Health and Community Services

The Provincial Government today made amendments to the regulations enacted under the Medical Care and Hospital Insurance Act. The regulations have been amended to add a section which further clarifies that the medically necessary removal and replacement of a cataractous lens is an insured service covered by MCP and the surgery must be performed in a hospital or a designated facility. The regulatory amendments do not apply to non-medically necessary, elective procedures.

Executive Council

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board and Minister Responsible for the Human Resources Secretariat, today announced that 96 per cent of NAPE employees that requested severance payouts in the first quarter will receive their payments in that period. This will represent $35.7 million in payments to 3,422 employees. The remaining employees that requested first quarter payments, will receive them in the second quarter.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, is wishing Muslim Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a happy Eid al-Fitr.

Office of the Seniors’ Advocate

In 2002, the United Nations identified the mistreatment of older adults as a violation of internationally recognized human rights. In 2006 the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse launched the first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

Non-profit community-based organizations are invited to submit proposals for the 2018-19 Linkages program to help young people between the ages of 18-30 gain and maintain meaningful employment.

Finance

The Provincial Government today announced a new Fraud Management Policy for core government employees, officers and contractors. The policy, which is now in effect, will assist departments in developing fraud management practices, including fraud prevention and detection as well as awareness of fraud risks.

Transportation and Works

The Department of Transportation and Works has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for interested proponents to provide services to monitor the speed of vehicles in construction zones during the 2018 construction season.

Service NL

Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary for Service NL, will join federal and municipal representatives for a handing over ceremony at the St. John’s Farmer’s Market tomorrow (Friday, June 15). The event takes place at the St. John’s Community Market, 245 Freshwater Road, St. John’s, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, will bring greetings at the opening of phase one of the Jeremy Cross Memorial Playground tomorrow (Thursday, June 14). Minister Dempster will be joined by the Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. The event will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Husky Energy Easter Seals House, 206 Mount Scio Road, St. John’s.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, will deliver opening remarks at a justice summit tomorrow (Thursday, June 14). The minister will speak at 9:30 a.m. at the Albatross Hotel, 114 Trans-Canada Highway, Gander.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will host the second Minister’s Roundtable on Immigration today (Wednesday, June 13). Minister Hawkins will be available to the media at 3:30 p.m. at the Capital Hotel, 208 Kenmount Road, in St. John’s.

Carol Anne Haley, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Community Services, will speak at the Choices for Youth annual general meeting today (Wednesday, June 13). The meeting takes place at The Lantern, 35 Barnes Road, St. John’s, at 3:00 p.m.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, today congratulated Dr. Amir Ali Khan and his team from the department’s Water Resources Management Division and Thomas Puestow and his team with C-CORE’s Earth Observation Group on receiving a Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland & Labrador (PEG-NL) environmental award for their innovative development of the Badger River Ice Monitoring Service.

Children, Seniors and Social Development

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, will bring greetings at the Atlantic Collaborative on Injury Prevention’s (ACIP) bi-annual Injury Prevention Conference on Wednesday, June 13. The event will take place in St. John’s at 8:15 a.m. at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland, 115 Cavendish Square.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced an investment of $5 million to create a new ambulatory care space at the Carbonear General Hospital, as well as the opening of 28 long-term care beds at the Pte. Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion. The total project cost includes $3.2 million from Budget 2018.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

The Provincial Government has awarded a contract for a flood risk mapping study, a flood forecasting model and a flood forecasting service for the lower Churchill River. The contract was awarded to KGS Group for $931,000, and work is anticipated to be completed by March 31, 2019. The information will assist in identifying areas that may be impacted by climate change as well as associated flood alert levels and flood hazard areas in the area.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

While some snow remains, Pinware River Provincial Park is now open for the 2018 camping season.

Executive Council

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will announce advancements to health care and service delivery at the Carbonear General Hospital tomorrow (Tuesday, June 12). The event will take place at 12:30 p.m. on the third floor of the hospital.

Today at an event in St. John’s, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced that the construction of the Voisey’s Bay underground mine will proceed this summer. Premier Ball was joined at the announcement by the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, and Eduardo Bartolomeo, Executive Director Base Metals, Vale.
