Office of the Seniors’ Advocate

Seniors’ Advocate Dr. Suzanne Brake today released “Long May Your Big Jib Draw: Setting Sail”. This report is a “what we’ve heard” document reflecting the major systemic issues that seniors have brought forward since the creation of the Office in November 2017. It is a result of many telephone calls, emails, consultations and public engagement sessions with seniors and their families and supporters throughout the province.

Fisheries and Land Resources

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, today announced the release of modernized aquaculture policies and procedures, including updated policies that set the stage for effectively managing our growing industry to become a world leader in environmentally sustainable aquaculture development. Minister Byrne announced the release during the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association’s 2019 Cold Harvest conference, taking place this week in St. John’s.

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, will bring remarks to the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association’s 26th Annual Cold Harvest Conference and Trade Show tomorrow (Wednesday, September 25). Minister Byrne will also announce updates to aquaculture sector governance.

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, will participate in a National Forest Week tree planting ceremony tomorrow (Wednesday, September 25) in celebration of National Tree Day. The event is being held at Victoria Park, 34 Sudbury Street, St. John's starting at 11:00 a.m.

The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, will speak at the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction ‘Stigma Ends With Me’ workshop tomorrow (Wednesday, September 25).

Applications are now being accepted for the K-6 Mathematics Bursary Program. Through the Education Action Plan, bursaries are offered to K-6 teachers to build capacity and to enhance math pedagogy in primary and elementary schools.

The Provincial Government is highlighting the work of public sector employees in the environmental public health field by recognizing September 23 to 27 as Environmental Public Health Week in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will speak at a celebration acknowledging the gifting of the Johnson Geo Centre to Memorial University tomorrow (Tuesday, September 24).

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Provincial Government is seeking input in the form of a survey from employees and employers in response to an application from industry stakeholders requesting to designate the boilermaker trade as a compulsory certified trade in Newfoundland and Labrador. Only registered apprentices and journeypersons may work in a compulsory certified trade.

The House of Assembly advises that a meeting of the Management Commission is scheduled for Wednesday, September 25 at 9:30 am in the House of Assembly Committee Room.

Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) joins with other information and privacy commissioners from across the country and around the world in actively promoting Right to Know (RTK) Week from September 23 to 28. The Honourable Carol Anne Haley, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, will speak at the unveiling of the 30th annual St. John's International Women's Film Festival line-up on Monday, September 23. The event will take place at ALT Hotel, 125 Water Street, St. John’s, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Due to a water main break, East and West Blocks of the Confederation Building Complex will remain closed for the remainder of the day. Updates will be provided over the weekend when more information becomes available.

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are being encouraged to get outside to explore our forests and learn more about the importance of this valuable resource during National Forest Week, September 22 to 28. This year’s theme is “Canada's Forests: Diverse Outdoor Classrooms”.

To further diversify and support economic development in the province, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced a business investment loan for the Newfoundland Chocolate Company. Premier Ball was joined at the announcement by the Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation which coincided with a grand opening ceremony for the company’s new location, in St. John’s.
