During the week of February 23-28, the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division of the Department of Justice and Public Safety conducted check stations on the Managed Snowmobile Trail system in the western portion of the province. Officers were ensuring that those using the trails were in compliance with legislation related to snowmobiling, particularly the Motorized Snow Vehicles and All-Terrain Vehicles Act.

New Community Clinic Officially Opened on the Burin Peninsula

The new community clinic located near Boat Harbour on the Burin Peninsula has officially been opened. Through an investment of approximately $2.5 million, the Placentia West Medical Clinic is providing medical and community health services to communities from Monkstown to Parker’s Cove serving a population of approximately 3,000 residents.

G.S. Hunt Ltd. has been awarded a $466,000 contract to provide exterior renovations to 16 Newfoundland and Labrador Housing units in two buildings on Vickers Avenue in St. John’s. The project is part of the ongoing revitalization of the Cashin Avenue-Froude Avenue neighbourhood.

Event Recognizes Significant Redevelopment of Operating Suites in St. John’s

An event was held today to officially recognize the redevelopment of two operating suites in the St. John's region. The upgrades create a safer and more effective surgical environment and represent a total Provincial Government investment of approximately $700,000. The redevelopment is the result of a funding partnership between the Provincial Government, the Resource Development Trades Council (RDTC) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Building Trades Council (NLBTC).
Accessible Parking Education and Awareness Campaign Begins

An awareness campaign to provide guidelines to businesses and municipalities on accessible parking has been launched through a partnership between Service NL and the Coalition of Persons with Disabilities – Newfoundland and Labrador (the Coalition). The campaign includes brochures for business owners, pamphlets for accessible parking permit holders and presentations to various organizations such as building design and construction industries and municipalities. The campaign promotes education and awareness of the proper designation of accessible parking spaces, including the correct installation of signage, as well as the proper use of the accessible parking permit.

Representatives from all parties of Newfoundland and Labrador stood united today with inshore shrimp harvesters, fish plant workers, community leaders, and business owners at a Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW) rally in Gander to seek better federal quota allocations. Last year, in response to declining stock numbers, the Federal Government placed the overwhelming majority of quota cuts on small boat inshore harvesters, while making minimal reductions to the amount large boat offshore operators could catch.

Significant Port Union Heritage Structure to Undergo Restoration

The Sir William Ford Coaker Heritage Foundation is better positioned to protect a key Port Union heritage structure as a result of a $100,000 Provincial Government investment. Funding will be used to carry out the restoration of the Union Electric Building which was designated as a registered heritage structure in 2009 by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador. Funding was provided through the Regional Development Fund.
