The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will speak at an event to mark the release of the Canadian Cancer Statistics 2015 Report tomorrow (Wednesday, May 27). The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Daffodil Place, 70 Ropewalk Lane, St. John’s.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will make opening remarks at the Atlantic Canada Clinical Engineering Society (ACCES) Conference tomorrow (Wednesday, May 27). The minister will speak at 9:30 a.m. in the Harbor View Room at the Delta Hotel, St. John’s.

Environment and Conservation

I rise in this Honourable House today to speak about the Municipal Stewardship Program. Unique to Newfoundland and Labrador, the program is a result of the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture program - a partnership of governments, conservation organizations and local residents implementing the goals and objectives of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. It encourages municipalities and local residents to recognize the value of wildlife habitat found in and near municipal planning boundaries and to implement ‘wise use’ principles as outlined within a conservation plan. The initiative places the responsibility of sustainable resource management into the hands of the people who know the land best and who have demonstrated a passion for its stewardship.

Health and Community Services

Mr. Speaker, I’m pleased to rise in this Honourable House today to acknowledge the official national launch of the Highly Sensitized Patient or HSP program for kidney donation and transplantation. The national launch was recognized across the country this past Friday and marked the successful implementation of the new program in all Canadian provinces and territories. Our province has been participating in the program since October 2013.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development will be available to media at 1:00 p.m. in front of the House of Assembly regarding the Canadian European Union Comprehensive Trade Agreement.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, is addressing the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's position regarding the ongoing dispute with the Government of Canada on the $400 million fisheries fund and the Canadian European Union Comprehensive Trade Agreement (CETA).

Health and Community Services

Residents in the Labrador West area will benefit from increased access to services for cancer patients through the construction of a new oncology suite at the Labrador West Health Centre. A tender has been awarded to Enercon Builders Inc. to construct the new suite, made possible through a Budget 2015 investment of approximately $450,000.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is continuing its commitment to supporting the diversification of regional economics with two projects in the Placentia area and St. Mary’s region. The Argentia Management Authority will receive $98,000 to develop emerging marine and industrial business opportunities, and the St. Mary’s Bay North Development Association will receive $29,000 to promote tourism attractions.

Transportation and Works

The Provincial Government has called the tender for upgrades to sections of the following roads in a number of communities on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula: Pouch Cove Line, Pine Line, St. Thomas Line, Torbay Road, Indian Meal Line, Beachy Cove Road, and various roads on Bell Island.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today in this Honourable House to acknowledge the important work of Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador.

Child, Youth and Family Services

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House today to proclaim May 24-30 as Early Childhood Educators Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. This week is a time to recognize the significant contribution child care professionals make in our province.

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise today in this Honourable House to acknowledge the designation of Thomas E. Ricketts as a Person of Provincial Significance.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Honourable Wade Verge, announced today that the House of Assembly Management Commission will hold its next meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26.

The Provincial Government will continue to invest in the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy with a plan to complete a province-wide network of transfer stations and waste recovery facilities by 2020 and develop full-scale organic waste management infrastructure by 2025.

Advanced Education and Skills

The Provincial Government is encouraging all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to celebrate the contributions of adult literacy learners in their communities. Nominations are open for the 2015 Council of the Federation Literacy Award. The deadline for nominations is May 29.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will speak at the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council (APEC) Major Projects 2015 event on Monday, May 25. The event will take place at the Delta Hotel, St. John’s. Opening remarks begin at 8:15 a.m.

Child, Youth and Family Services

The Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services, will attend a ceremony on Monday, May 25, to acknowledge and thank this year’s participants in the Roots of Empathy program. The event will take place at the Eastern School District Conference Centre, 40 Strawberry Marsh Road, St. John’s, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Executive Council

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will participate in the Thomas Ricketts Historical Designation ceremony on Sunday, May 24. The event will take place at 2:00 p.m. at the Robert French Memorial Stadium, Legion Road, C.B.S.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Smallwood Academy in Gambo is this year’s winner of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association for Community Living’s (NLACL) Inclusive Education Award. Each year the NLACL honours a provincial school for their outstanding efforts to develop and design their classrooms, programs and activities so that all students can participate in all aspects of school life. The Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services and MHA for Terra Nova, took part in the award ceremony.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development: Sport Newfoundland and Labrador

It was a celebration of excellence today, as Sport Newfoundland and Labrador announced the recipients of its scholarships/bursaries program during its 24th Annual Scholarship Reception, held at Johnson Geo Centre in St. John's. The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works, attended the ceremony on behalf of the Provincial Government.
