I rise in this Honourable House today to speak about the Municipal Stewardship Program. Unique to Newfoundland and Labrador, the program is a result of the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture program - a partnership of governments, conservation organizations and local residents implementing the goals and objectives of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. It encourages municipalities and local residents to recognize the value of wildlife habitat found in and near municipal planning boundaries and to implement ‘wise use’ principles as outlined within a conservation plan. The initiative places the responsibility of sustainable resource management into the hands of the people who know the land best and who have demonstrated a passion for its stewardship.

Mr. Speaker, I’m pleased to rise in this Honourable House today to acknowledge the official national launch of the Highly Sensitized Patient or HSP program for kidney donation and transplantation. The national launch was recognized across the country this past Friday and marked the successful implementation of the new program in all Canadian provinces and territories. Our province has been participating in the program since October 2013.

Contract Awarded to Increase Access to Oncology Services in Labrador West

Residents in the Labrador West area will benefit from increased access to services for cancer patients through the construction of a new oncology suite at the Labrador West Health Centre. A tender has been awarded to Enercon Builders Inc. to construct the new suite, made possible through a Budget 2015 investment of approximately $450,000.

The Argentia Management Authority will receive $98,000 to develop emerging marine and industrial business opportunities, and the St. Mary’s Bay North Development Association will receive $29,000 to promote tourism attractions.
