Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development will be joined by the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development and members of the Murphy Centre to view the recently completed gender neutral washrooms at the centre. The event will take place on Monday, November 2, at the Murphy Centre, 1 Prince Philip Drive, St. John's at 3:00 p.m.

Health and Community Services

The Provincial Government has provided $70,000 to CHANNAL to support a provincial peer-run mental health warm line and a peer support worker dedicated to support CHANNAL's Waterford Hospital Program.

The Provincial Government is supporting economic opportunities in the tourism sector with an investment of $643,000 in the Conception Bay South T'railway Project and the Town of Paradise's Multi-Purpose Site Project. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, at the Manuels River Interpretation Centre in Conception Bay South.

Natural Resources

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources, today released a review of the province's electrical system completed by Power Advisory LLC.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

Residents are encouraged to become familiar with the rules and regulations governing the use of all-terrain and other recreational vehicles in the province.

Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are reminded that Daylight Savings Time ends this weekend. At 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, clocks should be turned back one hour.

Transportation and Works

A tender has been issued for the sale of the Hoyles Escasoni Complex in St. John's. The facility was replaced last year with the new state of the art long-term care facility on Newfoundland Drive.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will make a funding announcement for CHANNAL tomorrow (Friday, October 30). The event will take place at CHANNAL's office in St. John's, 284 Lemarchant Road, at 11:00 a.m.

Transportation and Works

A contract for $7.2 million has been awarded for an extension and renovations to St. Peter's Junior High in Mount Pearl. Once construction is complete, the school will be able to accommodate approximately 780 students and help to meet the needs of the growing student population in the area.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

A contract has been awarded to Mike Kelly & Sons Limited valued at over $38 million for the construction of six waste transfer stations on the west coast of the province.

Advanced Education and Skills

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, will attend the official opening of the Hibernia Offshore Operations Simulator Facility tomorrow (Friday, October 30). The simulator is the latest in training technology for the offshore oil and gas sector. It will be used to train new and existing offshore personnel to perform complex tasks such as positioning and mooring offshore rigs and supply platforms in harsh working environments. The event takes place at the Marine Institute, 155 Ridge Road, St. John's at 10:30 a.m.

The event will take place tomorrow (Friday, October 30) at The Delta Hotel and Conference Centre, 120 Gower Street, St. John's, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Enhancements to the 10-year child care strategy, Caring For Our Future, will further address and strengthen the quality, sufficiency and affordability of the child care system in this province. The improvements announced today include changes to the Operating Grant Program, equipment grant funding and the Early Learning and Child Care Supplement for Early Childhood Educators (ECE) in regulated Family Child Care homes.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will address a workshop hosted by the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador entitled Practical Tools Workshop for Families and Healthcare Professionals. The workshop will take place tomorrow (Friday, October 30) at the the Jack Byrne Regional Sports and Entertainment Centre, 7 Kennedy's Brook Drive in Torbay. Minister Kent will speak at approximately 8:00 a.m.

Signage depicting the new name of the CBS Bypass - Peacekeepers Way - was unveiled today at an event held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Conception Bay South. The name was chosen in partnership with the Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association, Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Provincial Government is developing a 10-year strategy to end homelessness in Newfoundland and Labrador, with several initiatives already underway. Work on the strategy is being informed by recommendations contained in an independent consultant's report entitled A Roadmap for Ending Homelessness in Newfoundland and Labrador, prepared by Orgcode Consulting Inc., and released earlier this year.

Justice and Public Safety

Inmates and Correctional Officers at the Bishops Falls Correctional Facility (BFCC) have partnered with the Lions Clubs of Newfoundland and Labrador to establish a satellite eyeglass recycling depot at the facility. This initiative will result in refurbished eyeglasses being used for overseas vision mission work.
