House of Assembly

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Speaker of the House of Assembly, will be available to the media at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, November 1) to release the report of the 2016 Members’ Compensation Review Committee. The Chair of the Committee, Ms. Sandra Burke, Q.C., will also participate in the availability which will take place in the Media Centre, Ground Floor, East Block.

Residents of the Gander region are advised that the Arts and Culture Centre Pool in Gander, is expected to reopen in January.

House of Assembly

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Speaker of the House of Assembly, announced today that the House of Assembly will open for the fall sitting at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, November 14.

Children, Seniors and Social Development

The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, will attend a meeting of federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for Housing in Ottawa tomorrow (Tuesday, November 1).

Finance

The Provincial Government announced today that it has eliminated 13 communications positions. This decision corresponds with the previous elimination of senior executive positions at the deputy minister and assistant deputy minister level.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will bring greetings at an event tomorrow (Tuesday, November 1) in support of the Stella’s Circle Changing Lives Campaign. The event will take place at Stella’s Circle Employment Services Centre, 114 Cabot Street, St. John’s, beginning 10:00 a.m.

Justice and Public Safety

Investigations conducted by officers with the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division have resulted in recent convictions in Gander Provincial Court.

Health and Community Services

The Department of Health and Community Services is encouraging everyone six months of age and older to receive the provincial seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine. The vaccine provides protection against most common types of flu.

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, is pleased to join Atlantic Ministers of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island to officially launch Atlantic Canada Career Week, taking place from October 31 to November 4.

Justice and Public Safety

Today we learned of the sudden loss of RCMP Inspector Anthony Perry in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. I offer my sincerest condolences to his family and colleagues and join with all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in extending our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to them during this very difficult time. Inspector Perry was a valued member of the RCMP detachment in Labrador and during his short time he contributed immensely to the community. He will be greatly missed.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

Aerospace, defence and security leaders are congregating in St. John’s this week as the Aerospace and Defence Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador hosts the fourth annual Maritime and Arctic Security and Safety Conference (MASS16) at the St. John’s Convention Centre from October 27-28. This year’s theme – Converging Interests – highlights the industry’s challenges with operating in northern and Maritime environments.

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will speak at the National Skilled Trades and Technology Week Launch on Monday, October 31. The event begins at 9:15 a.m. at the Carpenter Millwright College, 89 McNamara Drive, Paradise.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

Ken McDonald, Member of Parliament for Avalon, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), along with the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, provincial Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, today announced combined funding of close to $579,000 in support of a community infrastructure project in Conception Bay South.

Service NL

A busing company, an Official Inspection Station and a mechanic have been charged with a total of 100 violations of the Official Inspection Station Regulations under the Highway Traffic Act after an investigation was conducted by the Highway Enforcement Branch of Service NL.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Students in all schools and post-secondary education institutions in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island will be invited to participate in activities promoting careers during the week of October 31 to November 4 as part of the Atlantic Canada Career Week to be launched by the Council of Atlantic Ministers of Education and Training (CAMET).

Justice and Public Safety

Earlier this fall, 12 inmates at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP) in St. John’s received training in Mental Health First Aid, a two-day program offered in conjunction with the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Today, the Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, presented the individuals with their certificates of completion at a ceremony at HMP.

Executive Council

Their Honours, the Honourable Frank Fagan, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Patricia Fagan will be giving out treats to Trick or Treating children at Government House on Monday, October 31, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
