The Department of Transportation and Works advises that on Monday, November 28, and Tuesday, November 29, the MV Capt. Earl W. Winsor will temporarily replace the MV Veteran while the MV Veteran undergoes upgrades.

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Service NL, will outline the details of the new Act Respecting Procurement by Public Bodies at a news conference tomorrow (Tuesday, November 22). The news conference will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Media Centre, East Block, Confederation Building. A technical briefing regarding the legislation will be available to media at 10:45 a.m. in the Media Centre.

The bridge known as the Old Track Bridge along the tributary to Raymond's Brook in the Burnt Hills, Goulds, is closed to all traffic. An update will be provided on Friday, November 25.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will launch the engagement process for the province’s new Business Innovation Agenda, tomorrow (Tuesday, November 22). The event takes place at Solace Power, 1118 Topsail Road, Suite 201, Mount Pearl, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Health and Community Services

The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, outlined Newfoundland and Labrador’s opioid action plan at the national Opioid Conference and Summit recently in Ottawa. The summit provided an opportunity to address the growing national concern surrounding the increasing number of overdoses and deaths caused by opioids, including fentanyl.

House of Assembly

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Speaker of the House of Assembly, announced today that the House of Assembly Management Commission will hold its next meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) has issued an Invitation for Proposals to the non-profit sector for the development of affordable rental housing for low-income senior households.

Voters are advised that polls for the Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board and Conseil scolaire francophone provincial de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador Elections will be open in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador tomorrow (Tuesday, November 22) from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Municipal Affairs

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, will speak at the official opening of the Dan Cleary Harbour Grace Community Centre on Monday, November 21. The opening of the centre, which is located at the entrance to Jamie’s Way off Veteran’s Memorial Highway, will take place at 6:30 p.m.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will participate in a panel discussion focusing on the National Early Learning and Child Care Framework. The panel will take place on Sunday, November 20, at 9:00 a.m. at the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre, Conception Bay South.

Nick Whalen, Member of Parliament for St. John’s East, attended an event in the Town of Torbay today to announce over $610,000 in community infrastructure investments from the Government of Canada. MP Whalen made the announcement on behalf of Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage (TBC). Bernard Davis, MHA for Virginia Waters-Pleasantville, on behalf of Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, also announced $150,000 in provincial funding for the Town of Torbay.

The Human Rights Commission will join with residents of Newfoundland and Labrador to observe Transgender Day of Remembrance, held annually on November 20. The day is specially designated to memorialize those who have faced discrimination, violence, and murder due to transphobia.

Environment and Climate Change

The Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) today announced the launch of Recycle at School, a program that provides schools in the central Newfoundland waste management region with the resources required to participate in the region’s mandatory recycling and garbage program. The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister Responsible for the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board, made the announcement with students from St. Paul’s Intermediate School in Gander.

Four non-resident hunters are facing charges of illegal possession of big game following an investigation by fish and wildlife enforcement officers which began on October 31 and resulted in the four individuals being detained on November 3. One of the four hunters is also facing charges of illegally applying in the resident big game licence draw and killing a big game animal without a valid licence.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will be in Ottawa on November 17-18 to participate in the 2016 Federal, Provincial, Territorial Meeting for Ministers Responsible for Innovation and Economic Development. The meeting is scheduled to take place on the 11th floor, CD Howe Building, 235 Queen Street, Ottawa.
