The Information and Privacy Commissioner, Donovan Molloy, has released his Report A-2017-003 under authority of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act. A summary of the Report is included below.

The public consultation sessions on Indexing Minimum Wage scheduled for Monday, February 6, at College of the North Atlantic in Corner Brook have been postponed until a later date.

Transportation and Works

Sea trials and crew training for the MV Legionnaire are nearing completion and the vessel will depart St. John’s harbour on Sunday, February 5, to replace the MV Veteran on the Farewell-Fogo Island-Change Islands run. The Legionnaire will enter service on Tuesday, February 7.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will bring greetings to the opening ceremonies of the 35th Mount Pearl Frosty Festival tomorrow (Friday, February 3). The event begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Glacier, Mount Pearl.

The Department of Environment and Climate Change is reminding residents that the hunting ban for the George River Caribou remains in effect and is essential to the herd's recovery. While a significant portion of the remaining animals in the George River Caribou Herd are wintering near the communities of Nain and Natuashish, this visible presence should not be interpreted as a resurgence in the herd's population.

The sections of the T'Railway Provincial Park located between Port Blandford and Thorburn Lake and from Notre Dame Junction to Red Fox Road that had been closed are now open.

The Gander pre-budget consultation session scheduled for Thursday, February 2, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. has been rescheduled to Monday, February 13, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Provincial Government has appointed two student representatives to the College of the North Atlantic (CNA) Board of Governors. Effective January 26, 2017, Jessica Brown and Owen Davis have both been appointed for two-year terms.

Consultations to help establish a clear and consistent method of determining future increases to the minimum wage will occur from February 6 to 23. The public are invited to provide online and written submissions, as well as participate in sessions in Corner Brook, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Grand Falls-Windsor, Clarenville and St. John’s.

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, today released the Provincial Government’s Five-Year Provincial Roads Plan, 2017 edition and the full list of road tenders for 2017-18. The plan uses an evidence-based approach to build, renew and maintain transportation infrastructure and takes full advantage of Newfoundland and Labrador’s short construction season while allowing for more competitive bidding.

Children, Seniors and Social Development

The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development and Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, will provide the keynote address tomorrow (Tuesday, January 31) at the Husky Energy Diversity Forum. The event begins 8:30 a.m. at Easter Seals House, 206 Mt Scio Road, St. John’s.

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, was joined today by MHAs and representatives of districts that contain damaged sections of the T’Railway Provincial Park for a meeting in Grand Falls-Windsor with snowmobile groups and key stakeholders. A report completed by Meridian Engineering was recently submitted to the Department of Environment and Climate Change on the damage. During the meeting, stakeholders and government officials spoke about which areas of the T’Railway are of greatest priority for snowmobilers, explored potential actions that could be taken to address the damages in light of the report, and discussed the extent of the repairs that will be necessary.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister Responsible for the Research & Development Corporation (RDC), will participate in a tour of RDC-funded commercial research and development performers tomorrow (Tuesday, January 31). Featured businesses are Kraken Sonar Systems, eSonar Inc. and radient360 Solutions Ltd. The tour will begin at 1:15 p.m. at the Kraken Sonar Systems office, 430 Water Street, Suite 100, St. John’s.

The Provincial Government is currently reviewing the Operating Grant Program, a voluntary program developed to help improve the affordability of child care services for families with young children throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

The event is being held at the National Research Council - Ocean, Coastal and Rivers Engineering Facility, Arctic Avenue, Memorial University campus, St. John’s, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
