Temporary Gas Tax Reduced by 8.5 Cents Effective Tomorrow

Beginning tomorrow (Thursday, June 1), residents of the province will see an 8.5 cent per litre reduction in gas tax. As part of Budget 2017: Realizing Our Potential, the Provincial Government committed to reduce the temporary gas tax by 75 per cent by the end of the calendar year.

Federal and Provincial Government Announce Supportive Housing Investment

The governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador have invested in transitional and supportive housing for youth in Southwestern Newfoundland. Supported by the Community Education Network (CEN), the Collaborative Foundations Youth Homelessness Initiative will focus on the provision of transitional and supportive housing and wrap-around services for at-risk and homeless youth ages 18 to 30. Located in Stephenville, the initiative will be able to assist up to eight homeless youth.

The Provincial Government, the City of St. John’s, Eastern Health and local community outreach organizations are partnering to educate the public about fentanyl-related overdoses and deaths. The work of the St. John’s Community Action Group on Fentanyl will begin this summer with pop-up tents promoting education and awareness about the opioid Fentanyl, the overdose antidote Naloxone, harm reduction, stigma reduction, and addiction treatment services.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Husky Energy today announced that Husky Energy, as operator, is moving forward with the West White Rose project offshore Newfoundland and Labrador. First oil is expected in 2022 with direct employment, business and other industrial benefits provided to the province totalling more than $3 billion in provincial royalties, equity, and taxes.
