The Provincial Government today announced it has reached a collective agreement with the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA).

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

Through financial support from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Canada, the Newfoundland and Labrador Snowmobile Federation is improving its trail grooming system and the Deer Lake Tourism Development Corporation is boosting Deer Lake’s tourism offerings.

Natural Resources

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, is participating in the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s Mining Convention and Trade Show (PDAC) at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from March 3 - 6.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will be joined by the Honourable Melanie Joly, Minister of Tourism, Official Languages and La Francophonie, and Gudie Hutchings, Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains, for two tourism visits on the west coast tomorrow (Saturday, March 2).

Today, the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, was joined by representatives of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL) for the signing of a proclamation acknowledging March as National Engineering and Geoscience Month in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

Today, the Honourable Graham Letto, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, launched the Provincial Government’s climate change action plan: The Way Forward on Climate Change. The Way Forward on Climate Change contains actions that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from across the economy, stimulate clean innovation and growth, and build resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will participate in the opening ceremonies for team sports in the 2019 Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games in Grand Falls-Windsor, tomorrow (Friday, March 1).

Fisheries and Land Resources

Residents are cautioned about reports of polar bear sightings in St. Lewis and Charlottetown. Conservation officers are monitoring the situation.

The Honourable Graham Letto, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, will release the Climate Change Action Plan during ACAP Humber Arm’s Coastal Matters information session tomorrow (Friday, March 1). Minister Letto will be joined by Sheldon Peddle, Executive Director of ACAP Humber Arm.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will bring greetings at an information session on the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) tomorrow (Friday, March 1). The session takes place at Alt Hotel, 125 Water Street, St. John’s, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, were in Ottawa today to present the Provincial Government’s submission on Bill C-69, which proposes to replace the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 with the Impact Assessment Act – setting a new federal process for impact assessments of major projects.

Children, Seniors and Social Development

Emma Mullett from St. John’s has won a bronze medal at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in female judo. This is the second medal for Team Newfoundland and Labrador so far at these Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will bring greetings at the announcement of a pilot program by the Stella’s Circle Just Us Women’s Centre today (Thursday, February 28). The event takes place at the Just Us Women’s Centre, Stella’s Circle, 142 Military Road, St. John’s, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, will present to the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources tomorrow (Thursday, February 28) on Bill C69, which will set a new federal process for impact assessments of major natural resource development projects.

Melanie Taylor from Conception Bay South has won Team Newfoundland and Labrador’s first medal at the 2019 Canada Winter Games capturing a gold medal in Special Olympics Level 2 Figure Skating.

The Provincial Government is seeking input from the general public and key stakeholder groups to help inform a comprehensive review of the Schools Act, 1997, the legislation which governs the operation of schools in the province.

Students, teachers and staff across Newfoundland and Labrador are celebrating Pink Shirt Day, February 27, to bring awareness to bullying and promote kindness in schools and communities. This year’s theme is “Be Kind.”
