Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced Newfoundland and Labrador will host the Forum of Labour Market Ministers (FLMM) Secretariat for a two-year term commencing April 1, 2019.

Fisheries and Land Resources

Voting for the Angler’s Choice stream of the International Year of the Salmon Fly Competition is now open. A panel of some of the province’s finest fly-tying enthusiasts has compiled a shortlist of the most commonly used salmon flies on Newfoundland and Labrador’s rivers. The design that lands the most votes will be designated Newfoundland and Labrador’s Salmon Fly. The winning fly will be announced May 1.

Today, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined by the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Indigenous Services for the Government of Canada, to announce an agreement that ensures Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are the principal beneficiaries of their offshore resources, strengthens how those resources are developed through joint management, and will also achieve electricity rate mitigation.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to highlight the MyGovNL pilot project for the Motor Registration Division that the Minister of Service NL and I launched last week in Gander. The pilot is a key part of the Digital Way Forward, which is our five-year plan to better deliver services online.

Legislation to regulate the payday lending industry comes into effect today, which will better protect users of payday loans in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, is commending the Town of Gander for placing two metal sharps boxes in the community. The intent of these boxes is to divert the random disposal of used needles, thus enhancing public safety. The boxes were provided through an initiative by the department and College of the North Atlantic.

Child and Youth Advocate Jackie Lake Kavanagh has released a new report Surviving Child’s Benefits: Who Is Missing Out? It concludes that some children of deceased parents in Newfoundland and Labrador do not receive Canada Pension Plan’s Surviving Child’s Benefit.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Through the Education Action Plan, $500,000 has been invested this year in 40 school libraries to support reading instruction and promote student engagement and literacy. Enhancements to these school libraries include new library resources, including texts, tablets, Makerspace materials, as well as materials and furniture that are creating inviting, engaging and more flexible learning environments.

Starting Monday, April 1, an opioid dependency treatment clinic will open at the Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre on Bell Island. Operated by Eastern Health, the clinic will serve both new clients and those currently receiving treatment at another location.
