Electors can now cast a ballot in the 2019 General Election. Special Ballot voting began yesterday (April 25) after the release of the list of official candidates.

The Departments of Fisheries and Land Resources and Transportation and Works remind drivers to watch out for moose and caribou on the highways, particularly in the St. Anthony and Howley areas where increased caribou activity can be anticipated as they migrate from their wintering areas.

Elections NL issued its list of officially nominated candidates earlier this afternoon. However, one candidate was erroneously left off the list: Carol Reade, New Democratic Party, Mount Pearl North. The candidate’s nomination papers were received on time and in good order.

This investigation involved children subjected to years of abuse within their family and in a subsequent alternate care arrangement while they were receiving protection services from the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development.

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador wishes to advise all potential candidates for the 2019 General Election that the deadline for filing nomination papers is 2:00 p.m. this Thursday, April 25, 2019 (1:30 p.m. in most of Labrador).

Elections NL is now accepting Special Ballot voting applications for the 2019 General Election. Special Ballot voting offers the opportunity to vote prior to the Advance Polls and Election Day. Any person who is 18 years of age or older by May 16 (Election Day), a Canadian Citizen and a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador can apply to vote by Special Ballot.

Mr. Bruce Chaulk, Chief Electoral Officer of Newfoundland and Labrador, issued election writs to all 40 district Returning Officers this evening. The general election will take place on Thursday, May 16, 2019.

Demonstrating a joint commitment to affordable housing for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, the Provincial and Federal Governments have agreed to invest a total of $270.6 million to help protect, renew and expand social and community housing in the province, as well as to support Newfoundland and Labrador’s priorities related to housing repair, construction, and affordability.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced appointments to College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Board of Governors.

Fisheries and Land Resources

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources is accepting applications under the Provincial Agrifoods Assistance Program (PAAP) and Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) for community pastures, which provide grazing land and enable livestock farmers to produce winter forage and increase herd sizes.

The Provincial Government has made important amendments to the Accessible Parking Regulations, previously known as the Designated Mobility Impaired Parking Regulations. The regulations were published on Friday, April 12, in the Newfoundland and Labrador Gazette and are effective from that date.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, and the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced approximately $2 million for five projects through the Innovation and Business Development Fund. These projects will help to grow and diversify Newfoundland and Labrador’s oil and gas supply and service capabilities.

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, will be speaking today (Wednesday, April 17) at the Mining Industry NL Luncheon and Annual General Meeting. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at 12:00 noon. The event will be held at the Capital Hotel, 208 Kenmount Rd, St. John's.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Provincial Government today released its Autism Action Plan. The plan will provide increased services and supports for individuals living with autism spectrum disorder. Budget 2019 – Building Towards a Brighter Future includes $2.5 million for plan implementation. Beginning in 2020, this amount will increase to an annual ongoing investment of $5 million.
