The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, wishes Baha’i Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a happy anniversary of the Birth of the Bab. The Birth of the Bab is one of the holiest days in the Baha’i faith, which has grown to include millions of people throughout the world, including Newfoundland and Labrador. It commemorates the October 20, 1819, birth of Siyyid 'Ali-Muhammad, an important leader in the Baha’i faith known as the Bab.

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, today announced the appointment of Wesley Foote as a provincial member of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB). Mr. Foote’s appointment, effective today, is for a six-year term. The appointment was made through the merit-based appointment process established by the Independent Appointments Commission (IAC) Act.

Today, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced that an Act to Amend the Smoke-Free Environment Act, 2005 is now in effect. This newly amended legislation will further protect public health by applying the same prohibitions currently in place for smoking tobacco and vapour products to the smoking or vaping of cannabis.

Newfoundland and Labrador today, became the first jurisdiction in Canada where non-medical cannabis is legal for recreational use. Today the Provincial Government has cleared the final legislative hurdle in advance of legalized recreational cannabis with amendments to the Highway Traffic Regulations and the introduction of Cannabis Control Regulations and Cannabis Licensing and Operations Regulations. These regulations come into force on October 17, 2018.
