Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, wishes Baha’i Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a happy anniversary of the Birth of the Bab. The Birth of the Bab is one of the holiest days in the Baha’i faith, which has grown to include millions of people throughout the world, including Newfoundland and Labrador. It commemorates the October 20, 1819, birth of Siyyid 'Ali-Muhammad, an important leader in the Baha’i faith known as the Bab.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, will bring greetings at the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s Police Studies Program 2018 Graduation Dining-in Ceremony in St. John’s tonight (Friday, October 19) at the Holiday Inn, 180 Portugal Cove Road. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Natural Resources

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, today announced the appointment of Wesley Foote as a provincial member of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB). Mr. Foote’s appointment, effective today, is for a six-year term. The appointment was made through the merit-based appointment process established by the Independent Appointments Commission (IAC) Act.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will speak at a Seniors and Youth Mental Health Stakeholder Conference tomorrow (Friday, October 19) at 11:30 a.m. at the Grand Falls Golf Course. The conference is hosted by the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor, with Central Health and the local medical community and supports the towns’ initiative for community wellness.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is recognizing the 25th anniversary of the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with the release of an updated Guide to Programs and Services for Individuals and Families. The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was first observed on October 17, 1993, as a day to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries

The Human Rights Commission of Newfoundland and Labrador would like to advise the public that nominations will close on October 31for the annual Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Award. This award will recognize an individual who has made and/or continues to make a meaningful contribution to advancing and furthering human rights in the province.

Today, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced that an Act to Amend the Smoke-Free Environment Act, 2005 is now in effect. This newly amended legislation will further protect public health by applying the same prohibitions currently in place for smoking tobacco and vapour products to the smoking or vaping of cannabis.

Newfoundland and Labrador today, became the first jurisdiction in Canada where non-medical cannabis is legal for recreational use. The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, and the Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board and Minister Responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation, are encouraging residents of the province to use cannabis safely and follow national and provincial laws.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to further their respective oil and gas industries. The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, signed the agreement on behalf of the Provincial Government in Guyana.

Today the Provincial Government has cleared the final legislative hurdle in advance of legalized recreational cannabis with amendments to the Highway Traffic Regulations and the introduction of Cannabis Control Regulations and Cannabis Licensing and Operations Regulations. These regulations come into force on October 17, 2018.

The event takes place at the Marystown Hotel and Convention Centre, Ville Marie Drive, Marystown, beginning at 11:45 a.m. Carol Anne Haley, MHA for Burin - Grand Bank will also attend.

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, will attend the 36th Annual Federal-Provincial-Territorial meeting of Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women from October 16 to 19.
