Education and Early Childhood Development

The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development:

Children, Seniors and Social Development

Mr. Speaker, today I rise to pay tribute to our province’s 1,500 social workers during National Social Work Month.

Mr. Speaker, while the rising cost of insurance premiums for the taxi industry has been a problem for a long time, our government is the first administration to deal directly with the matter by trying to find solutions.

Justice and Public Safety

Two new adult corrections programs will increase safety for the public and offer supports for offenders.

The current administration is the first to actively seek solutions and address a decade’s long problem facing the provincial taxi industry regarding insurance costs. That includes meeting with representatives of the taxi industry on a number of occasions and, together, implementing measures to help strengthen the industry and enhance the safety of taxis in the province.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, will be making an announcement regarding adult corrections programming.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will bring greetings at the Annual Presentation of Scholarships and Awards at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University tomorrow (Thursday, March 14). The event begins at 12:00 noon at the Hampton Hall Lecture Theatre, Marine Institute, 155 Ridge Road, St. John’s.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise today to celebrate the fact that Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism has been named one of the top advertising brands in Canada by Strategy’s Creative Report Card.

Finance

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, will address the monthly membership meeting of the Canadian Home Builders' Association - Newfoundland and Labrador tomorrow (Wednesday, March 13) at the Comfort Inn, 106 Airport Road, St. John’s, at 12:00 p.m.

Transportation and Works

The Provincial Government has made temporary arrangements to ensure the delivery of essential food and supplies to communities in Labrador while severe sea ice conditions are preventing ice breaking and shipments across the Strait of Belle Isle.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will bring greetings at the Opportunity Knocks Newfoundland and Labrador Symposium tomorrow (Wednesday, March 13). Organized by YWCA St. John’s, the symposium brings together newcomer women, employers, and service providers to develop mentorship and employment opportunities. The event takes place at the Emera Innovation Exchange, Signal Hill Campus, Memorial University, St. John’s, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today in this Honourable House to recognize a somber anniversary in Newfoundland and Labrador. The crash of Cougar Flight 491 – a tragic event that continues to resonate with residents of our province 10 years later. It’s the raw emotion we feel that serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the historical dangers associated with working on the ocean.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will join Nick Whalen, Member of Parliament for St. John’s East, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, for a funding announcement tomorrow (Tuesday, March 12).

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Speaker of the House of Assembly, advises that the Selection Committee for the appointment of the Information and Privacy Commissioner has been established in accordance with Section 85(3) of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015 (the Act). The vacancy in the position occurred as a result of the resignation of Mr. Donovan Molloy, who was appointed to the bench of the Territorial Court of the Northwest Territories, effective February 20, 2019.

The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced significant enhancements to the JobsNL Wage Subsidy Program that increase flexibility for employers and expand accessibility for workers.
