Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation and Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs, today highlighted some examples of the vitality of the Francophone and Acadian community on International Francophonie Day. This date falls within the pan-Canadian celebration called Les Rendez-vous de la Francophonie, which runs throughout the month of March.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

At the request of industry representatives, the deadline to provide input in response to an application from industry stakeholders requesting to designate Sprinkler Fitter as a compulsory certified trade in Newfoundland and Labrador has been extended to March 29, 2019.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today in this Honourable House to recognize the reopening of Beaver Brook Antimony mine in central Newfoundland – creating approximately 100 new jobs for the people of the province.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will be in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Sunday, March 17, to officially open the 2019 Labrador Winter Games. The opening ceremonies will be held at the E.J. Broomfield Memorial Arena beginning at 7:00 p.m. and will include the lighting of the games torch.

Health and Community Services

A number of localized outbreaks of measles in Canada and the United States have brought increased attention to this disease. At this time, there are no confirmed cases of measles in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Fisheries and Land Resources

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, will attend Seafood Expo North America 2019 on March 16, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Minister Byrne will host a reception for industry and meet with industry experts and seafood representatives responsible for sourcing products, equipment and services.

The Provincial and Federal Governments are investing more than $40 million over three years in new programs to lower greenhouse gas emissions and support clean growth across all sectors of the economy.

The Provincial Government continues to reduce red tape and help provide farmers with the tools they need to build a strong foundation in the agriculture industry, while ensuring a level playing field for forest harvesters who make their living selling timber.
