The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will officially dedicate the new residence at Memorial University tomorrow (Wednesday, October 8) in St. John’s. The Premier will be joined by the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, at the ceremony which will take place in the courtyard outside the residence at 10:00 a.m.
Aquaculture Industry Receives more than $48,000 to Support Marketing Initiatives

The Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA) will engage in an ambitious promotional campaign with assistance from the Provincial Government’s Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Program. The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, announced $48,750 for the association today, which will be used to help stage exhibits at events that include Seafood Expo North America in Boston, the Royal St. John’s Regatta, and the Down Home Expo.
Students Make the Grade in Latest National Science Assessment
Education
Newfoundland and Labrador students are first in Atlantic Canada and fourth in the country when it comes to performance in science, according to the 2013 Pan-Canadian Assessment Program (PCAP) results, which focused primarily on Grade 8 science outcomes. This is the highest ranking achieved by Newfoundland and Labrador since PCAP was initiated in 2007. Newfoundland and Labrador also ranked first in Atlantic Canada in reading and third in Atlantic Canada in mathematics.

The Department of Transportation and Works is advising that ferry service to and from Farewell will operate on a reduced scheduled from Saturday, October 4, at 3:00 p.m. to Monday, October 6, at 7:00 a.m. Farewell will be limited to passenger-only service and limited air service between Fogo Island and Gander.

$9.8 Million Investment Enhances Health Care Services in Happy Valley-Goose Bay

The residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and surrounding communities will benefit from $9.8 million in health care funding. The investment will be used to begin construction of the 20-bed expansion of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Long-Term Care Home and to purchase new equipment and support infrastructure upgrades at the Labrador Health Centre.

The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, joined representatives of the Coalition of Persons with Disabilities – NL in Gander today to launch a series of information and training sessions designed to improve emergency preparedness for people with disabilities. The sessions are part of A Shared Responsibility, a project which aims to better equip municipal planners and first responders, and to help people with disabilities, prepare for an emergency. The launch included an update on a draft planning guide – An Inclusive Emergency Planning Guide for Planners and Responders.
