Fisheries and Aquaculture

Northern Lights Seafood will explore the viability of producing a new seafood product with support from the Provincial Government’s Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Program. The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, today announced $39,000 to help the company research the production and marketing requirements, and the market potential, of producing half-shell frozen scallops.

Education

S&L Enterprises of Paradise has been awarded a tender, valued at $88,891, for a paving project at École des Grands-Vents in St. John’s.

Environment and Conservation

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Environment and Conservation, was joined by Corner Brook Mayor Charles Pender at a ceremony today announcing that the Provincial Government will provide $550,000 for phase two of energy efficient upgrades at the Corner Brook Civic Centre. The investment is through the Newfoundland and Labrador Green Fund administered by the Department of Environment and Conservation.

Innovation, Business and Rural Development: Research and Development Corporation
Natural Resources

The Research & Development Corporation (RDC) announced today an investment of $750,000 in support of a demonstration plant at Rambler Metals’ Ming Copper-Gold mine in Baie Verte. This demonstration technology has the potential to significantly extend the life of the Ming Mine beyond the current six years. The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister Responsible for RDC, made the announcement today at the Geo Centre.

The Provincial Government will hold the second and third of nine public sessions across the province for the Open Government Initiative tomorrow (Wednesday, September 10).

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-NL, will participate in an emergency services event tomorrow (Tuesday, September 9) at 12:15 p.m. at Mount Pearl City Hall.

Enviroment and Conservation

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Environment and Conservation, will make a funding announcement at the Corner Brook Civic Centre tomorrow (Tuesday, September 9). The minister will be joined by Corner Brook Mayor Charles Pender. The event will take place in meeting room two at 10:00 a.m.

Keith Russell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, will bring greetings at a St. John’s Board of Trade labour market and human resource workshop tomorrow (Tuesday, September 9). The workshop, Find and Create Great Employees, will take place 9:00 a.m. at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland in St. John’s.

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development and Minister Responsible for the Research and Development Corporation (RDC), will make an announcement concerning research and development funding for the mining industry tomorrow (Tuesday, September 9). Minister Sullivan will be joined by Glenn Janes, Chief Executive Officer of RDC, as well as representatives from Rambler Metals and Mining.

The cultural significance of wooden boat building was celebrated this past weekend at the seventh Annual Wooden Boat Conference held by the Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, joined participants in Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove for the conference dinner and kitchen party, and spoke about the importance of celebrating this unique aspect of the province’s identity and history.

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced today that Linda Anne Richards of St. John’s is the provincial recipient of the 2014 Council of the Federation Literacy Award for her achievements in literacy. Ms. Richards is one of 14 recipients across Canada to receive the distinguished award. September 8 also marks International Literacy Day.

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that the building in which the Corner Brook Law Courts are situated has been named after former Premier Danny Williams, Q.C. Premier Marshall was joined at the ceremony today by the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Justice, Danny Williams, Q.C., and members of the local judiciary.

The Provincial Government will hold the first of nine public sessions across the province for the Open Government Initiative on Monday, September 8. The session will take place in Glovertown at 7:00 p.m. at the Alexander Bay Lions Club, 127 Station Road.

Tourism, Culture and Recreation

The Honourable Tony Cornect, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, will be in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, September 8-10, to attend the first ever joint meeting of Federal-Provincial-Territorial Ministers Responsible for Tourism and Culture. The meetings will take place at the Delta Prince Edward.

Child, Youth and Family Services

On September 4, the Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services, met with Carol Chafe, the Child and Youth Advocate. The meeting focused on several key priority areas including the department’s continued commitment to working collaboratively with the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will address attendees at the 7th Annual Wooden Boat Conference at a conference dinner tomorrow (Saturday, September 6). The dinner will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove Community Centre located on Cribbies Road.

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Speaker of the House of Assembly, has been appointed Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board. The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, assumes the role of Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Provincial Government is investing $2.2 million in cost-shared multi-year capital works funding in the District of Carbonear - Harbour Grace. The funding will support water and sewer and lift station upgrades, a water main extension, and road improvements in the communities of Carbonear and Victoria.

The Provincial Government today announced its support of an agreement between Harvest Operations Corp. and SilverRange Financial Partners LLC for the sale of North Atlantic Refining Limited. This includes the oil refinery in Come By Chance as well as its North Atlantic-branded marketing, marine, and home heating businesses.
