The All-Party Committee on Mental Health and Addictions will hold today’s (Tuesday, June 23) public consultation in Grand Falls-Windsor at an alternate venue. The consultation will now take place at the College of the North Atlantic, 5 Cromer Avenue. The session will not take place at the Mount Peyton Hotel as previously announced.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission recognizes National Aboriginal Day and invites Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to mark the day on June 21. Proclaimed in 1996, National Aboriginal Day is an annual celebration of significant spiritual importance to all Canadians to showcase and celebrate the diverse cultures, unique heritages, and outstanding contributions and achievements of Canada's First Nations, Inuit and Metis people.

Environment and Conservation

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, will participate in the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) meeting taking place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 22-23.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will participate in the Celebration of 150 Years and Official Opening of the Revitalization Projects in Bannerman Park on Sunday, June 21. The ceremony will take place inside the main gate of Bannerman Park, Military Road, St. John’s at 1:00 p.m.

The Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, will bring greetings at the Labrador Shed Party – Meet and Greet at Expo Labrador 2015 on Monday, June 22. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the E.J Broomfield Memorial Arena in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, will participate in two National Aboriginal Day celebrations on Sunday, June 21.

Health and Community Services

Families in Newfoundland and Labrador will soon benefit from the addition of screening for cystic fibrosis under the provincial Newborn Screening Program.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Provincial Government continues to support the development of infrastructure to benefit the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Town of Bauline will receive an investment of over $110,000 cost-shared with the Provincial Government, to complete work on the new Bauline town hall and community centre.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador will be joined by the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, at the opening ceremony of the Avalon Telus Motorcycle Ride for Dad tomorrow (Saturday, June 20). The opening ceremony and blessing of the bikes will take place at Newfoundland Power, 55 Kenmount Road, at 9:00 a.m.

The Provincial Government today marked the release of an action plan to guide further implementation of Access. Inclusion. Equality – A Provincial Strategy for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, with the unveiling of $1.7 million in accessibility upgrades to the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s. The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, was joined by the Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works, for the event.

The Provincial Government continues to monitor for rabies after a cat tested positive for the disease in Labrador City in early June. This is the third domestic animal to be found with the disease this year. A dog was confirmed with rabies in Labrador City in February and another in Makkovik in April. In this latest case, the cat was attacked by a fox in mid-May and kept in a kennel for observation. The cat was euthanized after its behavior changed and it became aggressive.

Premier Wade MacLauchlan will host the 26th session of the Council of Atlantic Premiers in Charlottetown on June 28, 2015. Premiers Brian Gallant, Stephen McNeil, and Deputy Premier Steve Kent will attend.

As part of Public Service Week, the Provincial Government is celebrating approximately 450 employees who have reached significant service and career milestones within the core public service. Employees who have reached 20, 25, 30, 35 and over 40 years of service are recognized by government for their commitment to public service.

The Town of Portugal Cove-St Philip’s demonstrated its commitment to protecting valuable wetland habitat today by officially signing a Municipal Habitat Stewardship Agreement with the Provincial Government.

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Service NL, will discuss new requirements regarding bicycle helmets today (Friday, June 19) at 3:45 p.m. at the Canadian Tire store located at 40 Hebron Way in St. John’s.
